THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

As of 2001, Mr. Harte has authored and co-authored over 20 books relating to telecommunications technology. He has served as a consultant and expert witness for leading companies including Ericsson, Siemens, VLSI, AMD, Casio, Samsung, Sony, ATT, Nokia, Hughes, and many others.

RICHARD LEVINE is the founder and principal engineer of Beta Scientific Laboratory and is also Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. He is active as a technology consultant to many firms developing new cellular and PCS systems and products used in Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Israel, Korea, Mexico, and the United States.

Mr. Levine is a well-known teacher of cellular and PCS technology to people in the industry. He was formerly the chairman of several working groups in the North American digital cellular standards development.

Mr. Levine earned the Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Science degrees from M.I.T., is licensed as a Professional Engineer, and has earned both amateur and professional radio operator licenses. He has been issued several patents on telecommunications, computer systems, and related technologies.

ROMAN KITKA is the Director, Strategy and Business Crteation, Nokia Ventures Organization. He is a seasoned wireless communications industry veteran, innovator, and visionary.

During his 17 + years in wireless communications, he has held product planning and development, marketing, and market/business development positions with leading wireless manufacturers including Nokia Mobile Phones, Panasonic, GoldStar, and OKI Telecom. Mr. Kitka has influenced several cellular mobile, transportable, and portable phone model designs, features, and functionality. His efforts have resulted in the first cellular payphone, first cellular PBX adjunct "Business Link," voice recognition dialers, as well as the first PCS product launch in the U.S.

Mr. Kitka posssess exceptional foresight and understanding of global market needs, both from anthropological and psychological aspects, as well as the opportunities provided by existing and future wireless communications, Internet and related technologies, and business.

Mr. Kitka, a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey, is a co-author of the books CDMA IS-95 FOR CELLULAR AND PCS: Technology, Economics & Services; DELIVERING xDSL; 3G CELLULAR AND PCS DEMYSTIFIED; and WAP DEMYSTIFIED. Mr. Kitka has been a speaker at several wireless communications and Internet conferences and events, both in the U.S. and internationally.

Randomly ordered bluetooth specs

I'm glad the book exists because it does break down the myriad bluetooth specs into bite-sized chunks. I wish the book didn't copy and paste from the specs one paragraph at a time. The ordering of the various descriptions doesn't seem logical. They jump all over the place from circuit ids to piconets to how inquiry works via channel hopping. If you use the book as a reference to refer to acronyms and specific parts of the specifications, it works. Even then, contents are strewn across multiple sections.

Currently I am still working on the "Introduction to Bluetooth" 2nd edition book. So far I have found the material both interesting and useful. There are, however, some complex ideas and techniques that I hope to be able to understand with further reading and study. I like the book and look forward to what progress may await me..

This book accompanies an excellent You Tube Video Series

This is an older book and there don't seem to be any new copies around, so why did I buy it instead of a more current Russian Textbook? Because, I have already done the latter but afterwards I discovered a series on YouTube called "Russian World". It's an on-going series of 30 minute lessons and the Lady uses this textbook. After trying other Russian textbooks (Live from Russia and some others) and even having a live teacher I still struggled. I've learned more watching the YouTube Series than I ever learned in class. You can watch the series without this textbook, but if you can get it, it's much better! Book arrived in great condition.

When a stand-up comedian writes a book, the audio version enjoys a clear advantage over the printed word. Timing, delivery and vocal expression are as important to humor as the actual joke itself. So it is with this very funny collection of essays, monologues, observations and jokes by 30-year comic veteran Carlin. A one-liner like "I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed," moderately amusing in print, is hilarious in Carlin's bewildered tone. This audio contains "unabridged excerpts," which means that though it does not include everything from the book, the pieces that appear are performed in their entirety. The audio is paced nicely, alternating between long pieces (Carlin as a bureaucratic caveman calling a "staff meeting" to announce a new policy on human sacrifices), short observations and one-liners. Some of Carlin's older routines are included, such as his classic comparison of warlike football and friendly baseball. Carlin, the thinking man's comedian, is known for his fresh and weirdly funny take on life. This book's title accurately describes what's inside; these bits seem to have come tumbling out of Carlin's brain in random order. Some are laugh-out-loud funny and some are . . . well, just droppings. Among the funnier bits are Carlin's musings on names. He perceptively notes that one day nursing homes will be filled with Tiffanys, Ambers, and Ashleys--a scary thought. Then there's Carlin's ruminations on verbs. People used to take drugs, now they do drugs, although some people do lunch and take meetings. The book is also periodically interrupted with lists of Carlin's signature oxymorons and redundancies: new tradition, uninvited guest, and standard options are among the former, and close proximity and serious crisis among the latter. The book is rather annoyingly designed with bold headings that don't mean much ("F*** Al Jolson," for instance). Bad words, by the way, abound, but if you know Carlin's work, you'd expect that. A few of the bits are outright clunkers, but maybe we should cut Carlin a little slack. As one of his headings notes, "Most people are not particularly good at anything." Ilene Cooper

My absolute favorite piece of literature.

I am not much of a reader, I get bored easily from it. I just don't like doing it, but when I read a sample of this book on ibooks, and I only did because I am a big fan of George Carlin, I loved it, I laughed so hard and got addicted to reading it, and like I said reading books isn't a hobby of mine. If you're like me and you aren't much of a reader or even if you read all the time and you love to laugh and you love George Carlin like how I do, then this book is a good book for you. As soon as I finished the sample on ibooks i knew i needed the rest of the book, so I ordered the hardcover copy on Amazon.

Wacky, odd, compelling, interesting and never dull. George Carlin's Brain Droppings is even more vulgar in text. I love it. The book has a lot of lists, short snips of his opinions and observations. Quick and easy read. If you're not easily offended buy this, very entertaining. Wish we got a couple more years out of George, he is greatly missed.

If you love George, you'll love this book. I've read it over ten times since it first came out and I still laugh out loud. Not for the easily offended or those who cling to politically-correct language. A guaranteed mood lifter.

Ok. So I’m going to give a hopefully brief synopsis of the previous books, in case you haven’t read them for a while… If you haven’t read them you need to before you read this book. Trust me, they are soooo worth it. But seriously, you need to know about Jeremy and Aiden before you read this story.

Rance Crawford owns a textile mill in Granby Colorado, raising sheep, alpaca and rabbits, harvesting the fur, processing and dyeing it. In to Craw’s life comes Ben, an animal loving computer nerd. They have a very gentle romance, and fall in love. Theirs is the easier story of the collection. So Aiden and Ariadne have worked for Craw for some time, Aiden in the mill, Ariadne in the store. Prior to the arrival of Ben, Craw heads to Boulder once a month to make a delivery to a yarn store, and a “delivery” to Stanley, who works there. Craw finds Jeremy panhandling on the street outside the store one day, buys him some food and gets his story. Jeremy is a recovering con man, having witnessed his father get shot by a mobster, and had his life saved by a man named Gianni. He made an attempt to live on his own, got caught and spent two years in jail. He wants to live a straight life, but needs help. Craw gives him that help. Back to Granby they go, where Jeremy meets the barely 18 year old Aiden and falls in love….

Then we have Aiden and Jeremy, first they learn how to be friends, then move on to lovers. Jeremy is a scared bunny, not good enough for Aiden, not good enough for any of them really. Jeremy comes to trust him and they admit their love and settle in to a life together. Stanley is a recovering club kid, a twink at 30, with hair plugs, and an art degree, working in a yarn store in Colorado. When Craw stops his deliveries to the yarn store, he hires a delivery service, and in walks Johnny. They start to date, and out comes Johnny’s story. Stanley’s Johnny is Jeremy’s Gianni. Stanley and Johnny fall in love, but as things go in Amy world, it all goes to hell. The bad guys come for Johnny through Stanley, Jeremy steps in and gets the crap beaten out of him, thinking he’s paying the piper for his years of bad behavior. He spends two months in the hospital, sharing a room with Ariadne who is pregnant and not doing well. That all doesn’t sound too bad, but it really is. You have to read the books to get the whole story. The good and the bad.

So this story picks right up with poor Jeremy in the hospital, scared and miserable, convinced this is the price he has to pay for the cheating and lying he did with his daddy years before. We thought he felt unworthy of Aiden before? Now that he is broken and scared, he’s even more sure he isn’t good enough for love or friendship. Aiden has to start back at square one, rebuilding his trust all over again. The first quarter of the book is painful, Jeremy and Ariadne in the hospital, lonely and knitting. Getting the occasional visit from Craw and Ben, Rory (Ariadne’s husband) Aiden, and Stanley. It’s so sad. Jeremy is such a sweetheart, I love him dearly, but I want to shake him! He just will not see his own worth no matter what any of them say. It takes the others a long time to realize how screwed up Jeremy is by all of this. Aiden has a hard time for a while, he’s scared, but also mad. How dare Jeremy sacrifice himself when he could have run? Aiden is barely able to look at Stanley, knowing he’s the reason Jeremy did what he did. Well, Johnny really, but it was to directly save Stanley’s life. Eventually they get home, and try to settle back in, with Jeremy barely healed and barely sure he should be there.

What follows is a wonderful story about the growing community these people have made for themselves. Jeremy reluctantly comes to accepts his place within the group, slowly and carefully working in the store as he heals. They all start a project, I won’t say what, but Jeremy works on it and grows and grows. He works through issues with some old farts in Granby, earning their trust. He meets and adjusts to having a boyfriend with a family. He works through his trust issues in a new home. He’s accepted by the folks on the mill obviously, but also by their customers. All of that is great. Then there is his and Aiden’s relationship. Hard and tough on the outside, Aiden is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, fiercely protecting Jeremy, but also calling him out on his baloney, challenging him on his issues, eventually letting him do a bit of growing. Soft and gentle on the inside, taming Jeremy Bunny with love and care. Jeremy and Ariadne form a deep bond as well, I loved seeing that. He’s had no women in his life, Ariadne becomes his mother and sister in one. So sweet.

There’s honestly not a lot of drama or angst in this book, that has all happened. This is about love, acceptance, recovery, redemption, growth, community, and commitment. There is a baby, new critters, old critters, a big wonderful thing the boys all do, and a fabulous ending. They are all happy and settled, content and together. It’s just perfect. No one dies, no one gets hurt, none of the animals die, it’s just a gentle story.

Amy is a fantastic author, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. She’s one of the best in this genre. Flawed characters, angsty stories, and happy endings (eventually!) every time. Some of her books are sweet, some are so tearful I’ve only been able to read them once. Blackbird is definitely more toward the sweet end, the last one had the painful bits, this is just the icing on the cake. You will need a tissue to wipe a tear now and then, but not the whole box!

By the way, I was reading this book at work today. I finished a chapter that ended with “blackbird singing in the dead of night” as Aiden sings to Jeremy. That song runs through the story, and as I was working on a client ten minutes or so later I found myself singing the song. Then it dawned on me it was on the radio, not just in my head!

I waffled between 4.5 and 5 stars on this one, it really is a fabulous book, but in comparison to some of her other books with so much drama, angst, pain, joy and love, I’m going with 4.5. I want to give all of her books 5 stars cause she’s Amy, but if I gave a book like Mourning Heaven 5 stars, this needs to be 4.5.

Oh Jeremy I so wanted this for you

We Amy Lane fans have waited a long time for this one. We watched how Craw found a homeless starving young man fresh out of prison and brought him home. We watched this self conscious and timid young man feel he was worthless and not entitled to expect anything good in his life. So let’s start from the beginning

Jeremy 'doesn't really know what his true last name is’, has been raised by his father, a drifter and con man. They traveled the circuit like gypsies bilking old ladies and trusting families out of their hard earned money. Jeremy was good looking and retained the gift of gab that made many a women give him all of her money....until Las Vegas.
In Vegas he met Jonnie who worked for the local Mafia Boss. They had a “moment” the night before. Now Jeremy hides behind a curtain while his father was beaten and killed by the Mafia Boss....Jonnie knew he was there and never said a word but was at his room that night with some cash for Jeremy to get out of town. Being homeless and regaining a bit of conscience led to his stint in jail. This is how Craw found him on the balls of his ass, bring him up to the ranch, giving him a warm bed and a job.

It has been heartbreaking to watch how timid and unsure and hungry he was, not for food but he inhaled human kindness like a balm, it had never been directed his way and now he felt too dirty to accept it. Then there was Aiden Rhodes. .Aiden, underage still in high school saw Jeremy and knew he was THE ONE. They bickered constantly, their relationship one of Aiden teaching and Jeremy learning the machinery and wool and friendship.

These last three years of reading this series and reading about this young man has been difficult because we wanted Jeremy to fly. The end of the last book was a horror as timid Jeremy found his strength for his friend and was beaten almost to death by the mafia who was searching for Jonnie. If Aiden hadn't come Jeremy would be dead.

Amy you have taken another series and made it a homecoming . Every time I see pictures of the knitting critters I smile and know that their family is certainly growing at the alpaca ranch like it did at Deacon and Crick’s place at the Pulpit. You make us love these people, it’s a homecoming and this story again brought joyous tears to my eyes as Jeremy found where he so belongs. You did it so carefully and thoughtfully with the love of an author for your wounded boy. Your readers needed this story in the way you only could write it.

I have mentioned this in many reviews that I never know what to expect when I open a story of yours, but I do know that you were born to do this and Amy you make me fly as well. Everyone who loves life, and family and love should read your books and take with them the words you tell.

Amy Lane has done it again! Blackbird Knitting in a Bunny�€™s Lair a wonderful blending of sadness and hardship with humour and love. The whole Granby gang is back and supporting each other through Jeremy�€™s recovery, Ariadne�€™s pregnancy and the birth of her daughter.

Jeremy is so sweet yet damaged. This is really the story of him finding his worth, with Aiden�€™s love and support, while doing for others. I adored the love and generosity showed throughout the story, despite the few who were against them. It felt real and was heartwarming. I think all our lives would benefit from a little charity in them.

I had �€œBlackbird�€ playing in the back of my mind (Sarah McLachan�€™s version) as I read the book and it was the perfect accompaniment.
