Full of information, good variety of recipes with easy-to-understand explanations

I still consider myself an advanced beginner when it comes to cooking so I LOVE cookbooks like this where they explain WHY recipes are they way they are. Things I liked about this book:
1. It has a lot of cooking concepts that are discussed in detail, including the traditional food that I like to cook and serve to my kids. Often the explanation comes with a lot of pictures of high quality and you can feel the sense of art that the writer has. There were a lot of things I had never read/heard of before that make me proud of my self when serve to my husband.
2. The book is brimming with tips, tricks and information like how to keep food & vegetables fresh for longer time and how to make a successful cake that I think a lot of women fail in that :)
3. The book has lots of recipes and a good variety of types. It really has a little bit of everything like traditional Arabic, Italian, and British receipes.
4. The book is very well put together. The pages are glossy, the binding is tight. Feels like it can withstand years of being used.

At the beginning of its campaign, Kodak advertising primarily sold the fun of taking pictures. Ads from this period celebrate the sheer pleasure of snapshot photography--the delight of handling a diminutive camera, of not worrying about developing and printing, of capturing subjects in candid moments. But after 1900, a crucial shift began to take place in the company's marketing strategy. The preservation of domestic memories became Kodak's most important mission. With the introduction of the Brownie camera at the turn of the century, the importance of home began to replace leisure activity as the subject of ads, and at the end of World War I, Americans seemed desperately to need photographs to confirm familial unity.

By 1932, Kodak had become so intoxicated with the power of its own marketing that it came up with the most bizarre idea of all, the "Death Campaign." Initiated but never published, this campaign based on pictures of dead loved ones brought Kodak advertising full circle. Having launched one of the most successful campaigns in advertising history, the company did not seem to notice that selling a painful subject might be more difficult than selling momentary pleasure or nostalgia.

Enhanced with over 50 reproductions of the ads themselves, 16 of them in color, Kodak and the Lens of Nostalgia vividly illustrates the fundamental changes in American culture and the function of memory in the formative years of the twentieth century.

Get the actual text

My opinion is solely on the Kindle version of this text and has nothing to do with the actual content of the book. I am an avid reader. I made the change to e-readers back when the first generation b&w Kindle came on the scene. It was a difficult transition then but all these years later, I do 95% of my reading on some type of electronic device. I only purchase "real" books when the electronic version of the text is not available. I was really excited to find out that this book, required for one of my MSN classes, was available as an e-text. It meant that I could study on the go and not worry about lugging around a big text. Well.... I am less than satisfied with the quality of this e-text for the following reasons. (1)Illustrations crucial to identifying important landmarks and disorders are frequently mislabeled. I noticed when the font is changed the subheading switch around to different pictures. (2)There are no references to the actual page numbers in the book, so if you are assigned certain pages to read or if your instructor references a "real" page number, you have no clue where to go. (3) It did not come with an access code for the online content. I had to go back and forth with the publishers to get an access code for the coveted online material which leads to (4) The only complaint about the actual content of this text is that they reference the online material as though it is really helpful but there are no case scenarios or practice test that would be really helpful to prepare for exams. (5) the e-text utilizes way too may links as apposed to just including the information/ text close to the illustrations.

I don't usually write reviews but I really had to write this one in hopes of saving some people the trouble I'm having right now. If you need this text DO NOT GET THE E-BOOK.

Good luck trying to read the book for more than ...

For the money it costs, it should come with a hell of a lot more. For instance, audio lectures. Instructional videos that you don't need to log on to LWW the point for (and subsequently lose access to at their whim).

The "student resources" are a joke. They give students access to an image bank and the ebook.

That's some cutting edge stuff, wowzers.

Good luck trying to read the book for more than an hour or two at a time when the glare off of its glossy magazine pages blinds you.

For anyone hoping to apply information by taking mock systems exams or completing study questions, prepare to be disappointed.

Also, the image bank is pretty useless when you have to hunt around for them and download them piece by piece. I can see how it would help if you had to create your own powerpoint, but that's about it.

The only thing the ebook was good for was taking screen shots of tables & handouts (which is where all the really important info comes from for testing). I opened all the screenshots & printed them out to study/take notes on. I could pick and choose what was important & they printed out with better quality than I expected. And as a bonus, the normal computer paper didn't give me eye strain. Although it took some time to do this, it was more worth staring into a computer screen/shiny glaring paper.

I don't know. It's just like the people who made this book didn't consider the students. This is a book designed by someone used to doing things the old fashioned way of just plain old read and memorize. Reading and memorization is the first step. You have to be able to apply. This book is half-hearted. I get that people are going to get defensive over this review, but it's the truth.

If the authors/developers of this book & online content really gave a damn about helping create good HCPs, they would give us access to abridged notes/chapter.... Study questions to apply the material... The kind that go into detail about a patient's presentation & then ask you something pertinent for diagnosis (some conclusion you could only arrive at through understanding classic examples of diseases/disorders).

It would have instructional videos on how to perform an ABI & etc. It would include heart/lung sounds. It would include handouts on the tables in the back of each chapter or at the very least some kind of flashcards (would have been really useful for studying the skin diseases/disorders presented in the book). Instead, this book was designed in a cumbersome way that made things easier for the author/editor. Lots of flipping back and forth from back to front to know all the information r/t a disease/disorder/test/finding that is being discussed. The red notes in the margins of "abnormal findings" are inconsistent & incomplete. They are as much a distraction as a help. For me, it seemed like not enough attention was paid to what normal findings were.

You know what would be great as well?

If this came with a complete physical assessment charting normal findings for adult, pediatric, pregnant (at different stages) & geriatric. When I say "charted" I mean written out by system/worded in a way and order in which any physician would want/expect. Written in such a way that the reader not only knows you have assessed it and found it to be normal, but that makes sense & is concise. Then, abnormal findings would make a great deal more sense.

It would also be nice if "scenarios" were written out, so that students could organize pertinent info into HPIs. Because, let me tell you, I'm disorganized as hell and need that practice (as do many others--badly).

Great content, needs an updated edition

This is a good book overall. I've been a RN for 8 years, primarily in acute/intensive care, and have just returned to grad school to be a nurse practitioner. This is the required text for my advanced physical assessment course. I have read every chapter in it and taken the accompanying tests online. The pages themselves are thin. I am a highlighter and the highlighter ink often bleeds through the page, despite me trying to be light handed. There are some definitive editing errors throughout the book. Other reviewers noted this error and I'm surprised to have continued finding them despite the reviews and revisions on the text. It doesn't take away from the context, but it's slightly annoying when you pay big money for textbooks! The next revision needs to update new American Heart and American Diabetes Association guidelines, and it wouldn't hurt to update some of the 90s photos ;) My professor uses the tests from the publisher on Blackboard. The test questions are kind of obscure. Generally it's a 10 or 15 question test; our professor lets us use our textbooks so I can usually find the answers to all the questions but 1. Most I have to look up, others are so simple that I have to read the question twice to make sure I understood what it was asking. Another classmate had the same observations. Overall it's a good text, though, and I know the knowledge I have gained from this text will help me as I advance through my courses and begin clinicals.

Jill Rutherford is the Academic Director and founder of Ibicus International, one of the IBAEM regions leading training organizations. She has extensive experience teaching and consulting on IB Environmental Systems and Societies.

Gillian Williams is Education Durector at Utahloy International School in Zengcheng, China. She has experience of teaching and examining IB ESS, TOK and Geogrpahy, and has been invoved in curriculum review for both ESS and TOK. Prior to her move to China, Gillian taught in Jordan, Tanzania,and Malaysia.

Typos, not enough review questions.

Good content, too many typos. Seems like it was sent to publisher too quickly without enough editing. Glad it follows the course curriculum, and has good examples and case studies. I wish there were more review questions per chapter. My students would love some study questions.

Essential reading for first, second or even tenth time mothers!

Amongst the overwhelming market of books written for expecting mothers, I very much doubt there are many that cover as much ground as this for under �3. From conception up until after the birth, this book provides a wealth of information that draws on the author's own experience as well as expert advice. I found it wasn't too 'medical' either, there was a lot of practical advice and the author has a great way of creating humour out of a potentially scary situation. The `birth stories' at the end was a nice touch; it's reassuring to read about people doing things successfully in their own slightly different ways - as a new mother you will always worry about doing things wrong. For me, a guide like this is essential for when in doubt.

A real eye-opener.

As I started reading Nine Months I thought that this book would only be a guide through the stages of pregnancy and what to expect but it's much more informative than that; it starts from the basics of conception and offers a clear picture of the whole process. I found that it was a good all-round book that covers so many aspects, even from before conception and I found it useful reading about the author's experience and the tips from different perspectives. Coates' book is unique in that it seems to be aimed at educating both father and mother. I found the sections on `Common Problems' and `Baby's Development' particularly useful and the Birth Stories were enlightening.

great book but warning

I love this book it has a lot of good information and isn't as bias as many others I have read but it does side a bit with natural birth (which is fine with me) because that is what the writer experienced. Even though the bias she still encourages readers to do what's best for you and what your doctor recommends. Now the warning is that the book was written by a British women and some of the English may be odd like different names for types of doctors and such. Along with this all the sites are .co.UK which again is fine. But as long as you have common sense and or Google this book is very helpful and I recommend it 100%

This book contains a great deal of historic information about how the Everglades functioned hydraulically and ecologically. Once that background is set then the discussion is expanded to ways to restore structure and function. Particulalry important is the "why"; what does a functioning system provide to people, even if they aren't interested in visiting the 'Glades.
