Great ideas

I teach 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade science. I had the opportunity to see Rick Smith at a workshop, and I was aboslutely blown away by the amount of ready-to-use ideas he provided. Although the workshop was mainly focused on his material in Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (also an awesome book), Smith brought up ideas from Picture This!.

Picture This! provides ideas for implementing the use of "visual rubrics" in your class. Examples of ideas I borrowed- I let kids keep their textbooks in my classroom, and I was irritated that I had to fix the piles at least once a week. So, I followed Rick's advice and took a picture of books in messy piles; I photoshopeed the word "NO!" on it. I also took a picture of the textbooks stacked the way I wanted and photoshopped "YES!" on the photo. I hung the two pictures up side-by-side near the textbooks; within a day, all the books were stacked in neat piles because the kids easily understood what I wanted.

I also used a "Readiness to Learn" rubric. My 7th graders are loud and obnoxious- more so than any class of 7th grade I had before- and it was pointless to try and yell over them to be quiet. I had kids volunteer for pictures; the first picture was of chaos in the room, which I labeled as "5." I worked down the scale to "1," where everyone in the picture was ready to learn. This system was SO SLICK. If it got too loud in my room, I'd simply hold up the number on my figers that the kids were at. Once I was able to get down to a 1, I was able to continue.

There are SO many rubrics in this book that can be used. I think it would be the most useful to elementary teachers, but I found many uses (beyond those two things listd above) for my middle and high school kids.

There are many great examples of rubrics throughout the book, including a password to an online collection of rubrics & videos that you can use as desired. This is an amazing book that is incredibly useful- a picture is definitely worth a thousand words!!!

Very nice!

I started out my year with my Learning Strategies class with these pictures and something to discuss every day about them for the first week or two. They then added these pics to their folders after writing a description of each. I found this book very helpful with my ESE students and I can see where most teachers, esp. in ESE classes and the lower or middle grades, would find this book invaluable as well.

Still a key to new ways of thinking for public managers

Mark Moore postulates creating public value as a mode of practical reasoning and an alternative way of conceiving of the public policy challenge in relation with the public administrative enterprise. Moore offers a notion of strategic management in government as a way of linking the traditional study of ends in public policy with the traditional study of means in public administration. Moore postulates a strategic triangle, arguing that a useful conception of public value can be envisioned by managers if they integrate (1) substantive judgments of what would be valuable and effective (2) a diagnosis of political expectations (and legal parameters) and (3) hard-headed calculations of what is operationally feasible. The text articulates ways of thinking about and enacting public value in government, considers approaches and techniques for managing upwards toward politics and downwards toward organizational operations in relation to a wide variety of case studies, and concludes with a consideration of what consciousness or temperament is required of public managers if they are to be successful in managing, effectively and democratically.
The text is exceptionally well-written and is equally accessible to undergraduate students, graduate students, and practitioners. It remains a fundamental resource and an invaluable key to new ways of thinking for policy makers and administrators today.

Excellent and comprehensive

An excellent overview of the public manager as a creator of value. Moore does an excellent job drawing parellels to the private sector to illustrate how public managers need to address the needs of their consumers by creating value. The only downside of the text is the high level style of the writing, which sometimes makes it difficult to follow.

This book is an excellent source for practising public managers and academics and students who interest in public administration. As time passed, people, their representatives and public managers change or need to change their paragigms. Moore indicates the reason why public organizations must change. Organizational posture and position always must be in accordance with external environment. From the perspective of Moore, public managers must move away from the technicians that work to realize the goals imposed by elected officials with the maximum efficiency to the strategists that analyze the environment and find new ways for creating more value for people. This does not mean bureaucrats are completely free and can think and do whatever they desire. We know this situation points to the demolishing of the democracy. But Moore stresses that public officials must be made accountable for the results and all the time they must be oversighted by citizens, representatives, press, interest groups and public at large. This book is not a How-to-do guide. But we can adapt the principles proposed to the unique circumstances of our organizations.

A Handsome Compendium of Trademarks

There is no more concentrated form of human communication than a trademark. Symbols like the Golden Arches, the script of Coca-Cola, the swoosh of Nike communicate (and often do it without words or letters) not only the name of the company, but emotions connected with the company and its products. You see hundreds of trademarks every day, and so does almost everyone else worldwide (and even if letters and words are used, the trademark symbolism transcends language barriers). Fifteen years ago, design consultant Per Mollerup brought out a volume about trademarks, and now it is enlarged and expanded in a second edition, _Marks of Excellence: The History and Taxonomy of Trademarks_ (Phaidon). Large format, with illustrations on every page, this is a graphic text as befits its subject; but Mollerup has included text and notes about the origins, semiotics, purpose, and more, of trademarks. The marks themselves are the show, and the book is a satisfying display of graphic design.

Trademarks are so universal, Mollerup says, that kids can look at the logo and say "Coca-Cola" before they can read, and adults can read the logo faster than they can read the words typed out. Trademarks are visual identifiers permitting fast identification. Objects were first marked to show ownership, but also started being marked to indicate a maker. The most extensive part of the book is the one on motifs, like the pages on bird trademarks. They are naturals, of course, for airlines. There is the Lufthansa bird in flight, of which Mollerup says, "This bird was the result of a competition held in 1919. It was first used on an aircraft in 1920 and has never been grounded!" There are birds of different design for Singapore or American Airlines, but there is a penguin for books and one for clothing. There's a dove for soap, a peacock for NBC, and a happy, chattering blue bird silhouette for Twitter. It is fun to see on these pages just how many ways a bird can be drawn as a symbol and how simplified a design can be and still obviously be a bird. You can find many other living things used as starting points for trademarks. "Who would choose a scorpion for a trademark motif?" asks Mollerup, and answers by showing the shield-shaped trademark for a firm of racing cars, whose founder was a Scorpio, "and he thought that nobody would copy a scorpion." Of course the camel of Camel Cigarettes is here, not only in his picture on the package, but in his photo. There was a real camel, named "Old Joe," owned by Barnum & Bailey whose picture was taken in 1913. R. J. Reynolds himself drew the camel from the photo. If you are looking for graphics with no origin in nature, check out the pages on arrows. Arrows are used in trademarks for things going places, like British Rail or Amtrak. There is a famous hidden arrow within the letters that spell out FedEx. Amazon has an arrow, to indicate everything from its A to its Z, a smiling arrow (and does no one but me appreciate how phallic it is?). Crosses, too, are here, and are not exclusive to the Christian faith. There's one on Swissair, for instance, and on all those Swiss Army knives. There's a cross with a zipper down it, halfway opened, for Richman's Zipper Hospital. And then there is the crossed logo of Bayer vertical and Bayer horizontal. If you like stars, you can find them in the Texaco logo, and the one for Converse shoes. There is also a company called Star Semen, which sells semen from star bulls. Their star looks for all the world as if it has, stylized and not anatomically correct, testicles. A simple graphic is powerful. The logo for Pirelli does not depict a tire, but the bowl of the initial P is pulled out over the rest of the word, to show elasticity.

Part of the fun of looking at these pages is how familiar so many of these trademarks are, and realizing how effortlessly they register within the beholder's consciousness. Part is seeing how an infinite variety of trademarks can be generated given the limited graphic canvas on which they must be constructed. Another part is to realize the power of image, with all the questions it raises of style versus substance. _Marks of Excellence_ is good-looking, thoughtful, and thought-provoking.

Nina Baym (Ph.D. Harvard) is Swanlund Endowed Chair and Center for Advanced Study Professor Emerita of English and Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of The Shape of Hawthorne’s Career; Woman’s Fiction: A Guide to Novels by and About Women in America, 1820–1870; Novels, Readers, and Reviewers: Responses to Fiction in Antebellum America; American Women Writers and the Work of History, 1790–1860; American Women of Letters and the Nineteenth-Century Sciences and most recently, Women Writers of the American West, 1833–1927. Some of her essays are collected in Feminism and American Literary History; she has also edited and introduced many reissues of work by earlier American women writers, from Judith Sargent Murray through Kate Chopin. In 2000 she received the MLA’s Hubbell Medal for lifetime achievement in American literary studies.

Robert S. Levine (Ph.D. Stanford) is Distinguished University Professor of English and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of Conspiracy and Romance: Studies in Brockden Brown, Cooper, Hawthorne, and Melville; Martin Delany, Frederick Douglass, and the Politics of Representative Identity; and Dislocating Race and Nation: Episodes in Nineteenth-Century American Literary Nationalism. He has edited a number of books, including The Cambridge Companion to Herman Melville; Martin R. Wayne Franklin (Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh)�is Professor and Head of English, University of Connecticut. He is the author of James Fenimore Cooper: The Early Years (the first volume of his definitive biography, from Yale University Press), The New World of James Fenimore Cooper, and Discoverers, Explorers, Settlers: The Diligent Writers of Early America. Philip F. Gura (Ph.D. Harvard)�is William S. Newman Distinguished Professor of American Literature and Culture and Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of many books, including The Wisdom of Words: Language, Theology, and Literature in the New England Renaissance; A Glimpse of Sion’s Glory: Puritan Radicalism in New England, 1620–1660; Jonathan Edwards, America’s Evangelical; and American Transcendentalism: A History. For ten years he was editor of the journal Early American Literature. He is an elected member of the Society of American Historians, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Colonial Society of Massachusetts.

Jerome Klinkowitz (Ph.D. Wisconsin), is University Distinguished Scholar and Professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa. He is the author or editor of over forty books in postwar culture and literature, among them,�Structuring the Void: The Struggle for Subject in Contemporary American Fiction; Kurt Vonnegut’s America; Literary Disruptions: The Making of a Post-Contemporary American Fiction; and The Practice of Fiction in America: Writers from Hawthorne to the Present.

Arnold Krupat (Ph.D. Columbia) is Professor of Literature at Sarah Lawrence College.�He is the author of, among other books, Ethnocriticism: Ethnography, History, Literature; Red Matters: Native American Studies; and, most recently, All That Remains: Varieties of Indigenous Expression (2009). He is the editor of a number of anthologies, including Native American Autobiography: An Anthology and New Voices in Native American Literary Criticism. With Brian Swann, he edited Here First: Autobiographical Essays by Native American Writers, which won the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers Award for best book of nonfiction prose in 2001.

Mary Loeffelholz (Ph.D. Yale) is�Professor of English and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Dickinson and the Boundaries of Feminist Theory; Experimental Lives: Women and Literature, 1900–1945; and, most recently, From School to Salon: Reading Nineteenth-Century American Women’s Poetry. With Martha Nell Smith, she edited the Blackwell Companion to Emily Dickinson. Her essays have appeared in such journals as American Literary History, English Literary History, the Yale Journal of Criticism, and Modern Language Quarterly.

Jeanne Campbell Reesman (Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania) is Ashbel Smith Professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is author of Houses of Pride: Jack London’s Race Lives, Jack London: A Study of the Short Fiction, and American Designs: The Late Novels of James and Faulkner, and editor of Speaking the Other Self: American Women Writers, and Trickster Lives: Culture and Myth in American Fiction. With Wilfred Guerin et al. she is co-author of A Handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature and with Earle Labor of Jack London: Revised Edition. With Kenneth Brandt she is co-editor of MLA Approaches to Teaching Jack London, with Leonard Cassuto Rereading Jack London, with Dale Walker No Mentor but Myself: Jack London on Writing and Writers, and with Sara S. Hodson Jack London: One Hundred Years a Writer. She and No�l Mauberret are co-editors of a series of 25 new Jack London editions in French published by �ditions Ph�bus of Paris. She is presently at work on two books: Mark Twain Versus God: The Story of a Relationship, and, with Sara S. Hodson, The Photography of Jack London. She is a member of the Executive Board of the American Literature Association and founder and Executive Coordinator of the Jack London Society.

Patricia B. Wallace (Ph.D. Iowa) is Professor of English at Vassar College. She is a contributing editor of The Columbia History of American Poetry; her essays and poems have appeared in such journals as The Kenyon Review, The Sewanee Review, MELUS and PEN America. She has been a recipient of fellowships from the NEA, the Mellon Foundation, and the ACLS.

Fabulous learning

This is part of the course material required for my study of American Trends in Literature at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I was dismayed when I received it, it is so thick. However, the content is beautiful, every writer or series of writing I study awake me to a whole new world in my home county, America, I am so very grateful for this book and the insights it brings.

The Norton Anthology of American Literature

This was the text required for my class. I love the reading but the pages are paper thin and can tear easily. The text is small and sometimes difficult to read If you have any vision impairment. I wish it was a little bit bigger especially since I was using it for class and it certainly contains some classic material that I would like to read again later.

It's a Survey Text

Yep, I'm a geezer student. Norton does a great job of providing a solid survey text. Some of the introductory material is biased, cut if you can read past that, source some original material and university sites, you'll come away with a better, different, viewpoint than you had if you'd studied the same subject in the 80s or 90s.
