Tribology is the science of friction, wear and lubrication. It is a fast growing discipline generating a lot of interest at universities, industrial and other research centers, and has produced promising new results over the past five years. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, it requires efficient cooperation between mechanical engineers, materials scientists, chemists and chemical engineers, and even specialists in toxicology and environmental protection. Integrating very interesting results from the most important R&D project ever made in Germany, this ready reference and handbook offers a basic understanding of tribological systems and the latest developments in reduction of wear and energy consumption by tribological measures.
The result is an analysis of the most important tribosystems using modern test equipment in laboratories and test fields, the latest results in material selection and wear protection by special coatings and surface engineering, as well as with lubrication and lubricants.

About the Author
Theo Mang gained his diploma for mining engineering and his PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Clausthal (Germany). Since 1998 he has been Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen. He began working in the field of lubricants at Fuchs in Mannheim, becoming head of the technical department in 1980 and a member of the Executive Board of the global Fuchs Group from 1983 until 2001, responsible for technology and later additionally for group purchasing and human resources. Professor Mang is recipient of the Georg Vogelpohl Medal, highest award of the German Society of Tribology and has 80 publications (books, articles in Encyclopedias and in journals) to his name.

Kirsten Bobzin studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where she gained her doctorate in 1999. She then worked as a senior engineer at the Materials Science Institute of RWTH Aachen University, becoming Head of the Surface Engineering Institute in 2005. She won the Borchers Award of RWTH Aachen University in 2000, is and evaluator for the DFG, BMBF, AiF, is board member of the GTS, EFDS, WAW, aec, zmb and WeFo, is member of VDI, GfT, DVS, DIN, DGM, GfKORR, DKG, InPlas, IVAM, ASM, DGBM and has sat on the organizing committees of several international conferences. With over 400 scientific publications in national and international journals to her name, Professor Bobzin's research interests include surface engineering, brazing, tribology, corrosion, and materials science.

Thorsten Bartels obtained his Diploma and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Ruhr University, Bochum (Germany). His doctoral work focused on machine elements, gears and mechanical design. From 1997 to 2005 he worked for the Fuchs Group, Mannheim, where he was a leader for both internal and inter-company research projects. He was a member of and chaired some DIN, CEC, FVA, FVV and DGMK working groups and is a member of the FVA?s advisory committee. He was the head of the Fuchs Mechanical-Dynamic Test Laboratories, supporting product development, product management and research while consulting and driving the development of new test rigs and test methods for engine oils, hydraulic fluids, gear oils, and greases. In 2005 he moved to Evonik RohMax Additives GmbH, Darmstadt, where he is head of the Performance Test Laboratory, developing new additive technologies, coordinating external research projects, and supporting the Technical Service department and external customers from the oil industry. He has authored many articles in scientific publications.

In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams

Lightroom is one of the most popular pieces of software available for people who want to process their digital images. It has an easy-to-use interface. If you learn to use Lightroom from a book like Scott Kelby's "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)" you can improve the quality of your images in a short time. But if you really want to squeeze the most out of the software then you need a book like "The Digital Negative".

The Digital Negative deals with just the image processing functions of Lightroom and Camera Raw, the plug-in that comes with Photoshop, which shares a processing engine with Lightroom, although the interface is different. Schewe also covers some of the uses of Photoshop for photograph processing that are beyond the capabilities of Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw.

After an introduction to Lightroom and Camera Raw processing, the author goes down the list of processing functions of the programs, covering the functions of each panel, usually in far more detail then one finds in an introductory book. (including the newest function, dehaze). Then he explains how he processes a variety of images, with his explanations of why he moved the sliders and buttons the way he did. Schewe then explains how he move images into Photoshop for the processing that can't be done in Lightroom and Camera Raw. The author finishes up with a discussion of his own workflows and even suggestions for speeding up the software functioning.
This is not a book for beginners. In fact, to get the most out of this book one ought to have some familiarity with the software discussed. The author's method is to present an image that requires processing and then to discuss what adjustments need to be made to enhance the image. Since he doesn't walk the reader through the image step by step, like Kelby, it is essential that one have familiarity with the panels and the results one can expect from moving a slider. But if one is familiar with the software, one can learn just how to use it to get more artful images. Schewe's language is as simple and understandable as one can expect for this more advanced topic.

The book doesn't provide downloadable images to use in tutorials, nor given the author's approach, is that necessary. Buried deep within the book (a sidebar on P.163), there is the address of a companion website where one can download a few of the images and examine the final images to see the settings Schewe actually used, but I didn't find this to be particularly helpful. Moreover it's just as well the author doesn't rely upon the reader being concerned with specific numerical settings because the screen shots of the panels required examination with a magnifying glass to see clearly.

I almost wish that Camera Raw had not been discussed, because of the dangers of confusing it with Lightroom, but Schewe does a good job of distinguishing them. He does show that there are some things that you can do with an image moved into Photoshop with Camera Raw that you can't do with Lightroom.

The Photoshop section deals with just a few tools to improve an image beyond Lightroom and Camera Raw. Some are pretty familiar, but the suggestions for selective sharpening may require several readings to comprehend.
Notwithstanding the blurb on the back cover, this is not a book for beginners. On the other hand, once you have a handle on Lightroom, Camera Raw, and for the fifth chapter, Photoshop, this book should help you to improve the quality of your images.

The Digital Negative - interesting & unusual

This book, The Digital Negative, is both interesting and unusual. It is interesting in that the author, Jeffe Schewe, creates a pseudo character, the Digital Image and then processes it in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. It is unusual in that this is the first time I have ever read about the developmental processes of Lightroom and Photoshop in the same book. I have read many books on Lightroom and many books on Photoshop. Yes, they may mention both programs in the same book but only in an incidental fashion. Here, the author describes in some detail the steps and progressions taken in each program to bring the main character, The Digital Negative, to its full realization as a well-developed photo.

Before getting into more detail, let’s look at the hard facts about the book. First, this is a second edition of this book updated to incorporate the latest developments in digital photography and its various programs. It is a soft cover book of 321 pages and measures 8 inches across by 9 inches tall. The suggested retail price is $49.99 however, at the time of this writing it was available on Amazon for $37.48. It also comes in a Kindle version. The Book Level rating is Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced. I have no problem with the latter two ratings but I would quibble with the Beginning rating. We will get into that shortly. The author, Jeff Schewe, is very well versed in digital photography and in both Lightroom and Photoshop having served as an early alpha tester for both.

As stated above, the Digital Image is the main character in this book. Schewe makes a strong case for creating all digital images using the raw format thus maximizing color capture. He describes in some technical detail all of the piece parts in a camera that are involved in capturing the digital image (one of the reasons for my quibble with the Beginning rating, too technical for a beginner). The balance of the book is devoted to processing the Digital Image, first in Lightroom and then in Photoshop. Lightroom is first treated fundamentally and then each of the developing processes in the program is examined more closely. Since many of the Lightroom processes also appear in Photoshop, that program skips the fundamental exposure and gets right into the developmental functions of Photoshop. During all of this, the author points out the similarities and differences between the programs. As I stated previously, this is the first time that I have read a book that does such an in-depth look at Lightroom and Photoshop in the same tome.

An interesting aspect of all of the Lightroom/Photoshop descriptions is the author’s asides about how these programs were initially developed and how they are very similar in some aspects and very different in others. These anecdotes stem from his early involvement in their development.

The book is well written. It is also well illustrated. It differs from other books on the subjects of Lightroom and Photoshop in that it does not provide a step-by-step detail such as you would find in Scott Kelby’s books. The prints of program screens are clear and readable. The final section of the book concerns creating an efficient workflow. The author presents some workflow principles and five work flow stages. He then weaves them into his personal workflow.

As stated previously, I have read a number of books on Lightroom and Photoshop. This is the first one that I have read that gave me so many comparisons between the two in the same book. I also very much enjoyed Schewe’s asides and info on the development of these programs. He has created a powerful argument for the use of the raw format in digital photography. It will cause me to do some experiments to decide if I want to employ it full time or not. It is that good a book that it has a hard-headed JPEG user like me wavering. If you are a dedicated digital photographer, this book is an investment well taken.

The best of its kind

The title says exactly what this book is about -- getting as much as possible from raw image files processed in Lightroom, Camera Raw, and Photoshop. And Schewe delivers. I've read any number of books about this software, particularly LR, but none of them has been as informative and immediately helpful as this one (I'll also say a word for its companion volume, "The Digital Print"). Applying what Schewe says in "The Digital Negative" immediately improved the quality of my post-processing and enabled me to do a better job of matching the final print to what my eyes saw in the field. I've been using Lightroom since version 1, and thought I knew the software pretty well, but Schewe taught me plenty that was new.

A major strength of the book is that Schewe gives you more than just recipes -- he explains how the tools work, why they do what they do, and this allows you to use the tools more effectively, to tweak an image in ways that pull out that last little detail that makes an image eye-catching. For example, the LR Develop/Basic sliders are adaptive, while the LR Develop/Tone Curve makes simple curve adjustments. Knowing this allows choosing the right tool to achieve the effect you want.

Schewe's book requires some work by the reader, but it's definitely worth it.

The book is outdated but it is still worth it. There are only two chapters that is worth reading. Everything else, don't even bother reading it. It is a good read if you are into long term investing. There is a chapter on using mini contract if you don't have the require capital to trade. Although, the MidAm is no longer around, there are still mini contract on the grains, coffee, crude, ect. You just have to look for them. My trading platform has them and checked the trading volume. Very low but we are talking about long term not short term like a few minutes! One key that I will say is that you have to wait for the commodities to hit low, depress prices before starting to buy. Also, when prices are high as well, to short them. But I would not suggest shorting them if they are high. They can go higher before breaking

Its worked since 1991 except one year, when I didn't scale trade this way

I can't say enough good things about this book. I have not had a single losing trade since 1996. I got to know the author on a first name basis and he is not pleased with the gal in Florida that took over the business. Be aware of a similar trading system. In my eyes, the scales orchestrated by that firm were (are) not set up properly. You can expect a comfortable 20 - 40% return each year trading Wiests way (Ive had more several times). There was one year when I had a paper loss the first year, broke even the second, and the third and fourth year my account just screamed. (I had 74 coffee contracts at one time...lots of oscillations) The best thing about this is I can continue to be a contractor, real estate investor, farm investor and don't have to watch the market once a scale is set up. There is one drawback to this....I would not trade this way unless you have at least $100,000. Having this much (or more) creates many more opportunities for oscillations which will help with the draw down of the account. I had a student that made $48,000 in six months...not bad but he was extremely lucky. All the commodities we scaled went straight up in short order. Not a good lesson in true scale trading. I had mentioned I haven't had a losing trade since 1997, in 1996 I just got out of silver and the only thing to scale at that time was feeder cattle. I was the only one on the floor at REVCO that made money that year (a fair amount mind you) and the broker kept on cheering me on when I put 10 and 20 lot orders to buy feeder contracts. I just kept buying, he kept cheering me on stating "man, your account is going to be really fat at the end of the year". I kept buying more and more contracts not figuring them properly to my scale. I had 263 of those puppies, (thats not a typo, I had 263 feeder contracts and was reported on the floor of the CME)Well.....it went against me....they liquidated my account....I sold a 50 lot at the all time low. Look at the chart, someone had to be a buyer and someone had to be a seller, I sold 50 contracts at the low,...lucky me.) Thats what happens when you don't scale trade and speculate. I know several grain traders at the CBOT and several S&P and Bond traders at the Merc. They think Im crazy for trading the way I do but I know for a fact,...I have pulled more money out of the market than they have over the past 20 years....plus I don't have gray hair like they do. The system works so well that you will probably become bullet proof and want to change it. And when you do...well you will become like most all traders.
