Dialogue on the Infinity of Love (The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe), by Tullia d'Aragona

Celebrated as a courtesan and poet, and as a woman of great intelligence and wit, Tullia d'Aragona (1510–56) entered the debate about the morality of love that engaged the best and most famous male intellects of sixteenth-century Italy. First published in Venice in 1547, but never before published in English, Dialogue on the Infinity of Love casts a woman rather than a man as the main disputant on the ethics of love.

Sexually liberated and financially independent, Tullia d'Aragona dared to argue that the only moral form of love between woman and man is one that recognizes both the sensual and the spiritual needs of humankind. Declaring sexual drives to be fundamentally irrepressible and blameless, she challenged the Platonic and religious orthodoxy of her time, which condemned all forms of sensual experience, denied the rationality of women, and relegated femininity to the realm of physicality and sin. Human beings, she argued, consist of body and soul, sense and intellect, and honorable love must be based on this real nature.

By exposing the intrinsic misogyny of prevailing theories of love, Aragona vindicates all women, proposing a morality of love that restores them to intellectual and sexual parity with men. Through Aragona's sharp reasoning, her sense of irony and humor, and her renowned linguistic skill, a rare picture unfolds of an intelligent and thoughtful woman fighting sixteenth-century stereotypes of women and sexuality.

From Library Journal
As part of a series on important women writers in the period 1300-1700, this booklet provides the first English translation of an important Renaissance dialog on the nature of human love. D'Aragona (1510-56), a wealthy courtesan and poet, daughter of a Roman courtesan and (probably) Cardinal Luigi d'Aragona, argues that human sexual drives are irrepressible and that a moral form of love must recognize both its sensual and spiritual aspects; here she challenges Catholic teaching and the prevailing Platonic philosophy of her day. Russell (European languages, Queens Coll.) and Merry (modern languages, John Cook Univ., Australia) have produced a lucid and lively translation; the useful introduction gives an analysis of the dialog. The introduction is the thing
By Marie Sharon
The introduction to this volume, from the Other Voice series out of the University of Chicago Press, by Rinaldina Russell is exceptionally good. It is helpful in tracing the path of Tullia d'Aragona's education that took her to the understanding that allowed for the writing of this tract, and it is a tract, a philosophical tract, argued in the most proper dialogic method with Tullia as the antagonist.

The argument is stated: "Is there love within limits?" While this argument deals with the subject, love, it is not really about love. Varchi, the protagonist of this argument, maunders around in his "questio" dialogic method, in a manner that I kept thinking of as Renaissance scholasticism, with the incessant splitting of hairs, carping about the meanings and comparative meanings of words used in the dialogue.

Footnotes in the book were a must and were handled well, giving the reader all she needed to prevent confusion in the narrative and giving edification and reminders of the philosophical questions implied and their premises. The purpose is not to solve the question, or come to an answer, but to investigate, peruse, belabor, and fragment in the best dialogic manner. This disassembly accomplished, the true cleverness in the arguments comes in one-up-manship, catching the other out in misspeaking, and revealing the true nature of love, which is its difficulty.

Great book! Well worth the read. Looking forward to more books from this author.
By Teresa E. Snyder
What's not to love about this book? It's true love (high school sweethearts) given a second chance after 17 years. Plus a duck named Rufus! Love and forgiveness - with trust issues thrown it - best describes this book. Don't be fooled into thinking its going to be predictable. Sure, there were a few things I saw coming, but there were just as many that went a completely different direction. I also felt the connection between Quentin and Amy. Quick - because you want to keep reading to see how it all ends - easy, feel good book! I hope the author writes more books just like this one.

Not my Style
By Iola
Amy Walsh has returned to her home town of Goose Bay, Washington, for the first time in seventeen years, covering maternity leave for the English and journalism teacher. One of her brightest students is Shayna Macmillan, who she finds is the daughter of Quentin Macmillian, the high school sweetheart who abandoned her with no explanation and married his beautiful best friend instead. Shayna has been paired with Bradley Baxter for a journalism assignment, and her father is angry when he finds out--angry enough to visit the teacher and demand she change the assignments. He's shocked when he realises the teacher is Amy Welsh, his one-time love.

The Amazon blurb says: "When Amy Welsh returns to Goose Bay as a substitute teacher, she has no intention of seeing Quentin Macmillan, the man who once left her waiting in the rain clutching her suitcase and dreaming of becoming his wife. Seventeen years later, his teenage daughter shows up in Amy's class with plans to reunite her widowed father with the woman he has always loved."

Don't you love it when the blurb gives away half the plot? I actually hadn't read the blurb before reading the book, so I thought best part about the novel was trying to work out the motivation for Shayna's actions, because they didn't seem in character. When the big reveal came at the end, it was a surprise to me, and it explained Shayna's actions nicely. But it won't be a surprise to anyone who's read the blurb.

Amy is thirty-four going on eighteen, and I'm wasn't convinced she had the emotional distance to see Quentin as the man he is today rather than the boy he was seventeen years ago. One minute she's determined never to trust a man or let Quentin anywhere near her heart, the next she's flirting, going on a date with him or kissing him (and not just a peck on the cheek). Even when she was convinced she was seeing the man, not the boy, I felt she was being led by her teenage emotional self, not her adult self.

But Amy wants to know why Quentin never turned up that last night, and it seems that every time they are about to have `the conversation', they put it off (and those plans kept going awry). Why not just say it?

I was expecting a different reason, so No Substitute scores a plus for the element of surprise, but when the Big Reveal came, I wasn't convinced. It didn't seem logical. I didn't find it realistic that a man who is supposed to be intelligent couldn't come up with another solution. I understand that it was supposed to cement him in our minds as being noble and loyal, but it came across to me as controlling, because that is how I had seen him acting throughout the novel, particularly in relation to his daughter. He certainly wasn't an example of Christian forgiveness in action.

On the plus side, the writing was good and the minor characters, Shayna and Brandon, were excellent--real teenagers who I could believe. Amy, Quentin and Shayna are all Christians, and I thought the spiritual aspects and the underlying theme of forgiveness were handled well, without being preachy. A solid debut novel with several layers and a nice mix of funny and serious.

Thanks to the author for providing a free ebook for review.

No Substitute
By Narelle Atkins
I really enjoyed reading 'No Substitute', a fun and light hearted reunion romance between childhood sweethearts Amy and Quentin. Amy returns to Goose Bay, hoping to get past her teenage infatuation with Quentin once and for all. She never knew the real reason why their teen romance ended and Quentin married someone else so soon after she left town. Quentin's teenage daughter is in Amy's class, and she sets in motion a plan to push her father and Amy together.

Amy and Quentin are fascinating characters who deal with situations that challenge their faith. Amy grows in her faith as she rediscovers Goose Bay and her love for Quentin. He is a lovable hero who is doing his best to raise his teen daughter on his own. We see Quentin's faith in action and his willingness to forgive in difficult and challenging situations. A very cute duck named Rufus also features in the story, set in Washington State. I highly recommend this book to those looking for an entertaining and inspiring Christian romance with a forgiveness theme.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.

Adventurous, addictive and wholly romantic
By Laurel Ann
At first glance, it is easy to see why some modern readers might overlook ROSS POLDARK, the primogenial novel in Winston Graham’s THE NOVELS OF CORNWALL family saga. Originally published in 1945, most seventy-year-old books are now long forgotten. Its main character is a man—when to appeal to its primary audience most historical fiction is carried by a female protagonist. The setting can be off putting too. It begins in 1783, a difficult and depressing time in English history after the loss of the American Colonies, when social, political and economic upheaval crippled the country. Fueled, by angst, obsession and regret, it is about as far removed from the refined country drawing rooms, witty repartee and genteel romance found in Jane Austen novels as it could be.

Despite these questionable first impressions, this novel and its eponymous hero have “legs.” It has never gone out of print and continues to build a fan base, mostly generated from the 1975 – 1977 landmark television adaptation, Poldark, starring Robin Ellis. And now after forty years the BBC and PBS have joined forces again for a reboot of this very popular classic starring Aidan Turner as the swashbuckling hero. With so much clout behind it, who could not be tempted to see what the original novel was all about?

Set in Cornwall, Royal Army officer Captain Ross Poldark returns home a scarred and weary soldier from fighting in the American Revolutionary War. It is a disheartening homecoming. His father Joshua has recently died, his sweetheart Elizabeth Chynoweth is engaged to his cousin Francis Poldark and his inheritance, the family residence, farmland and tin mines lie totally derelict. There does not appear to be any reason for him to stay.

The local economy does not fare much better. The tin and copper mines owned by the landed gentry are in serious decline while nouveau riche banker George Warleggan prospers by extending credit, foreclosing and building a financial empire on the hard work of others. Bonded to the land, his tenants and the hope that Elizabeth will return to him, the temptation to leave and take the easy road is not even a serious option for this Poldark. With the help of two of his father’s idle servants, Jud and Prudie Paynter and a street urchin turned kitchen maid Demelza Carne, Ross fights to rebuild his pride and his family fortune.

“Looking east, upon Hendrawna Beach, the sea was very clam today: a smokey grey with here and there patches of violet and living, moving green. The waves were shadows, snakes under a quilt, creeping in almost unseen until they emerged in milky ripple at the waters edge.” (p. 33)

Surprisingly, we are immediately drawn in by author Winston Graham’s opening chapters. His writing is succinct, lyrical and hypnotic. He throws so much adversity in our hero’s path that we cannot help but root for the underdog. We learn early on that Ross Poldark is not your typical landed gentry. He may have left for the war a young ensign with a dubious reputation, but he returned two years later a seasoned captain—a mature leader of men tempered by British injustice and influenced by the ideals of liberty and equality by the American patriots. Deeply committed to helping the local villagers, his proletariat views are not welcomed by his own class. In his mind, what is right to be done cannot be done soon enough regardless of the consequences. He abhors aristocrats and their privileged way of life—delighting in thumbing his nose at them in scandalous ways.

About half-way into the novel we realize that Captain Ross Poldark could be an iconic romantic hero to rival Mr. Darcy, Mr. Rochester and John Thornton. He’s handsome. He’s rebellious. He’s broody. He’s the dark Poldark; the one with the youthful reputation as a wastrel, gamester and smuggler clutching at his left shoulder. He drinks and thinks way too much, and his cousin Verity, the only family member to visit him, is deeply concerned for his welfare.

Ross reaches a low point in his life at the wedding of his beloved Elizabeth to his cousin Francis. “All of the time at the back of his mind had been the half conviction that somehow the wedding would not be. It was as hard to believe as if someone had told him he was going to die.” (p. 44) During the wedding banquet at his uncle’s estate, Trenwith, while a cock fight is underway in the dining room for the amusement of the guests, Ross seeks out an encounter with Elizabeth who attempts to explain her decision to not follow through with their youthful promises to each other.

“There is no time to explain everything; perhaps I couldn’t explain it if there were. But I do want you to try to forgive me for any unhappiness I may have caused you.”

“There is nothing to forgive,” said Ross. “There was no formal undertaking.” (p. 48)

This conversation, and their choices of how to deal with the situation, foreshadows their continued, tormented relationship—her fickle nature and need to please her family and society, and his poker-faced indignation against adversity. Each of these personality foibles are the backbone of this story; while there are many other characters and subplots churning throughout the novel, it all comes back to Elizabeth’s decision to marry another man and Ross’s obsession to possess her.

Author Winston Graham’s writing is superb. Fast faced, descriptive and engaging, his style is a clever blending of both literary and commercial fiction. He particularly excels at multi-character scenes where the action and dialogue joyfully skips about a room. The Truro Assembly Room ball is one of our favorites. In the course of one chapter we are introduced to Cornwall’s polished society bathed in candlelight and decked out in elegant frocks and swaggering finery. Here we witness polite conversation and scurrilous gossip, flirtations and put-downs; meet a scheming mother with five unwed daughters, a handsome captain courting an on-the-shelf spinster and our hero Ross, scandalously dancing more than two times with a young, ambitious debutante, then fleeing the scene in anguish upon the arrival of Elizabeth and Francis. “Elizabeth’s beauty struck him afresh. The fact that another man should be in full enjoyment of her was like the torture of damnation.” (p. 64) Sullen and brooding, he arrives at a local tavern to drown his sorrows in brandy and the local light skirt.

This scene is as close as we get to anything remotely resembling a Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer novel. Refined society is not where Ross Poldark chooses to spend his time, nor does Winston Graham. This story is about money, or the lack of it, the shifting fortunes and social standing of the ruling classes, and the emotional forces that drive men to achieve success and the women that they desire. Along the way we learn a lot about late eighteenth-century copper and tin mining in Cornwall while swash and buckling through fist fights, riots, prison breaks, duels, poaching and pillaging. After all, this is a man’s story and we certainly see life through Ross Poldark’s manly eyes. When he rescues thirteen-year-old street urchin Demelza, and her mongrel dog Garrick at the Redruth Fair from a gang of bullies, we begin to see that there might be a softer side. Nobly, he feeds her and offers her a ride home to her father.

“They reached a break in the track. Ahead lay the way to Illugan; the right fork would bring him to skirt St. Ann’s whence he could join the usual lane to Swale.” (p. 75)

Before they part, he generously offers her a job as his kitchen maid. She gladly accepts, if only to get out of the thrashing that awaits her at home. Unknowingly, he has reached an important juncture in his life and it will never be the same after this point. Society is scandalized by his altruistic actions, thinking he has taken her for carnal reasons, but he holds firm and pays her greedy father her annual wages. She brings life to his lonely home with her youthful energy, humor and dedication to him. It will redeem his embittered soul.

When after three years of service her father wants his daughter back, and commands her to return, Demelza must comply. Heartbroken, she is certain that Nampara is her home now and that she cannot leave Ross. She loves him, even though he has never shown her anything but the respect that a master owes their servant. Desperate to stay, her first attempt at coquetry is a painful failure. Ross is angered and confused. “He felt like someone who had adopted a tiger cub without knowing what it would grow into.” (p. 215) Concerned by her flirtations he angrily tells her,

“You know what people say of you, Demelza?”

She shook her head. “What?”

“If you act like this, what they say of you will become true.”

She looked at him, candidly this time, without coquetry and without fear. “I live only for you, Ross.” (p. 217)

If you read one historical fiction novel this year, let it be Ross Poldark. Adventurous, addictive and wholly romantic, history buffs will applaud Graham’s meticulous research, Jane Austen fans will delight in the witty repartee and humor, and romance readers will swoon over the discovery of an iconic romantic hero truly worthy of wearing the mantle.

Love the PBS Series Love the Books
By Deb McNaughton
I saw the first season of the PBS series before reading the books, so my views are shaped by my admiration for the program. This book covers about a half of season one. What I appreciate most about this series is the complexity of the characters that Graham created. These people are real to me. The main characters have flaws that are believable. They struggle through difficult times and make decisions based on the circumstances of their status and upbringing at the time. So many historical fiction novels are written like costume dramas where the morays of today are imposed on a prior century. Poldark does not do that and therefore allows the reader to sink into the era and experience their struggles first-hand. It's as if Graham had actually written the books in the 18th century. At its heart, it's a love story and entails many different relationships woven together. There's nothing sappy about the story - every morsel of happiness is hard won. If you watch the TV series, the books follow the story fairly closely with more detail in the book. You should read this book with the expectation to read the entire series, because the story ends abruptly and without a real finish. I've now read several in the series and find they all end this way. You have to be in it for the long-haul. BTW, I listened to this book on audio and the reader is very good. While this first book is read by a man, there is a female reader for book 2 (Dimelsa). It took me by surprise at first, but she was very good, too. The male voice comes back for book 3. If you are an audio reader like me, you will like the presentation.

Book and TV series complement each other
By Jaylia
As soon as I read the first few pages of this book, I was hooked.

The prose is beautiful, even graceful, without being ornate or fussy and Graham writes his characters, female and male, with clear-eyed but sympathetic insight that reminds me of George Eliot. There are touches of history (the doings of mad King George, the unrest in France, etc.) and humor, but the heart of the story centers on the families--noble and not--of Cornwall. We see their courtships, their marriages, and their home lives, and we travel to the mines, farm fields, and ocean waters where they earn their livings. It’s a credit to Graham’s skill as a writer that I was actually interested in the sections on copper mining.

In the first chapter of the book--and first episode of the TV series--Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall after fighting with the British in the American Revolution, only to find his father dead, his property in ruins, and his girlfriend engaged to his cousin. Ross is the son of a younger son, and not much interested in the niceties of class and society, making him an appealing character for modern sensibilities. His quick to learn but almost feral kitchen maid Demelza also plays a major role in the story, and so does Elizabeth, his former girlfriend, and his cousins Verity and Francis.

The book and the TV show complement each other wonderfully. The gorgeous scenery of the BBC production made my reading pleasure all the more vivid, and the book fills in details that the show has to skim over. The novel also gave me a chance to dwell in the story a little longer--an addictive pleasure. Immediately after finishing the first book I started the second volume in the series.

Jerked: A Stepbrother Mob Romance (City Series), by B. B. Hamel

My future stepbrother. My personal bodyguard.

Colin Blake is a mob a**hole. He’s rude, crude, and loves a good fight. He’s arrogant, self-assured, and won’t hesitate to take what he wants.

And we’re stuck in the same house. All because my psycho ex-boyfriend is chasing me down and won’t stop until he steals me back.

Worst of all, my stepbrother bodyguard treats me like a prisoner, and I’m supposed to act like I’m not staring when he walks around in just a towel. The truth is, I hate him for jerking me around when were younger, but I still want to taste his lips whenever we talk.

I can’t stand it.

I hate that I need his help. I hate that I want his body.

Even with the mob ready to go to war, all I can think about is his cocky grin driving me insane.

Jerked contains mature content (explicit sexual situations, violence, and mature language), and is recommended for audiences 18+.

Jerked is a standalone, full-length novel. No cliffhanger.

* I was gifted an ARC of Jerked for an honest review. *

Jerked was a thrillingly good ride that offers something different to lovers of Stepbrother Romances.
This was my first time read by this author as well as my first ARC. The blurb had me take notice from the start. With the suggestion of half naked man and Mafia families at war, its a safe bet to say I'm intrigued, however my last Step Romance left me with the a bad taste of disappointment, so some of my excitement got mixed in with nervousness.

The story of Jerked is centred around Brenna and Colin. Brenna is the Irish Mafia princess and Colin is the No.2 man to her mob boss Dad. I need to point out that these two are not actual Step siblings, Brenna dad has always treated Colin like a son so they have a more pseudo Step relationship than any parent marriage linking them.

Brenna has been long absent from her family after leaving for college. While away she starts a disastrous relationship with an Italian mobster whom she now finds herself running from. When she returns home to safety, she straight away runs into a freshly showered and half naked Colin, who soon informs her that he's to be her white knight and protector.

Now my lovely hottie Colin was the highlight of Jerked. You may be thinking an Irish mob hero to be a hard and arrogant ass, but not my wonderful Colin. This man maybe cocky about his cock but he knows how to respect a woman and his determination when going after Brenna and the bad guys was sexy and powerful.

This wasn't as gritty as you may expect from a mob romance but for me personally, I was good with that. The fast paced story provide plenty to keep me interested and even though the characters weren't Step siblings there was a nice twist that builds up the angst of" we shouldn't be doing this".

For most part l loved Jerked and would definitely recommend it to others, but it wasn't perfect.
I found Brenna generally likeable. She was a bit spoilt at time but I liked her strength and sass, but if I'm honest I didn't completely understanding her. This may just be me, but I didn't fully get where she'd been all these years or why she'd stayed away so long. My second issue with her was her lack of common sense. At one point in the story because of poor decision making she nearly gets hurt badly. While she's asking herself why these bad thing keep happening to her, I actually shouted aloud, to others confusion,
" Its because you keep doing stupid things."
On the positive side of her making mistake, it did help to push the story forward so its not all bad.(especially in the car with its quick reclining seats.)

I've got a lot of enthusiasm for this story. I think anyone who loves Stepbrother Romances will want to one click buy this and for those who don't, Jerked may pleasantly surprise them.
I've been entertained from start to finish reading this. I loved the light mobster feel, it didn't have any horrid parents and the sexy times satisfied my need for naughty. Jerked may of been my first book by this author but it won't be my last (less)

I totally enjoyed this highly erotic tale
By OLGA therebelreader
I totally enjoyed this highly erotic tale. The writing is so lush and expressive that I could picture every move that Colin made, feel every heartbeat and breath from Brenna and Colin’s encounters and revel in the joy felt by these two at finally being free to love each other and to be together.

This stepbrother romance is a very different and unusual one. Colin is Breanna’s father protg and his future adopted son, not legally yet. He is arrogant, dominant and cocky. Breanna has run away from her psycho ex and returns back home to safety. Her father asks Colin to protect her from her ex who’s been stalking and terrorizing her. Breanna, being the Irish Mafia princess, is in serious danger and Colin takes seriously his role as her security guard.

Breanna has always had a crush on him and now it’s even more difficult to resist him. And, these feelings are mutual. They spend most of the time together and she finds it more and more impossible to resist his sexiness, attractiveness and alphaness. Their chemistry is explosive and Colin cannot resist her, either. Collin is the man she needs and he offers her more than his protection, for many…hot nights! His intentions are simple… to leave nothing untouched on her, to use every method he has at his disposal, every trick in the damn book to have her under him screaming his name over and over.

Great plot and lots of hot and steamy scenes with the hot and sexy Colin. The story is exciting, thrilling, erotic, romantic, sensual and sexy. I believe that the dialogue could be better written and more profound. The characters are captivating and engaging. Beautiful angry girl trying to escape her cheater, psycho ex-check! Heated attraction and forbidden love-check! Recommend it-check!

INTERESTING, SUSPENSEFUL STORY WHICH WOULD BENEFIT FROM EDITING
By The Literacy Advocate
JERKED has a premise which is interesting as well as exciting, despite its predictability. Brenna, the 24 year-old daughter of a Philly Irish mob boss, returns to the fold to escape complications of her life in NYC (no spoilers here!). Upon returning to her father's home, she runs right smack into the one who got away, Colin, who is now her father's second-in-command. When her problems follow her to Philly, Brenna is ambivalent about her father's determination that Colin become her protector and move into her home to do it. The attraction which existed years before between Brenna and Colin returns in full force, and the suspense regarding the dangers facing Brenna, the complicated romance of which Brenna's father is unaware, and dad's plans to legally adopt Colin as his heir provide the three conjoined main conflicts of the story.

Ms. Hamel has given us likeable characters whom we want to route for, as well as a balance of tension and humor in their relationships. The story would have benefitted greatly from less cliche; there are dozens of over-sexed comments, and the characters are presented as largely one-dimensional and single-minded. The sex scenes, and there are many, basically repeat the same actions; the syntax also abuses word choice repeatedly. One of the sex scenes referred more than a dozen times to how the characters "worked" over each others' various body parts. There was also a great deal of shoulder shrugging, grinning, and many other repetitively used verbs to describe the same basic mechanics by the characters, rather than a variety of physical descriptions and body motions. In addition, more attention paid to grammar and punctuation would have enhanced story quality.

Since I read an advance review copy, there may have been revisions and edits which addressed the above (Colin's 'white beater,' for example, should have been his 'wife beater'). A good edit would have been able to take the author's interesting premise and likeable characters' potential and develop them into a 4-star story. Ms. Hamel clearly writes with joy, and the reader can sense her regard for her characters; these factors encourage me to look forward to her next story!

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the author in exchange for my honest review.

[From the Author's Preface] When I had the honor of giving Harvard University's John M. Olin Distinguished Lecture, from which this slender volume is derived, I became only the second scholar from the rigorous discipline of etiquette to address that otherwise distinguished center of learning. My mission [in this book] is to call attention to the need for a philosophically acceptable and aesthetically pleasing standard of American etiquette. In my humble way, I only wish to finish the task at which our Founding Fathers failed. It is my hope that this small treatise will cure the historic ills of American society. If not, it has at least already enabled me to endow, at Harvard, the Miss Manners Champagne Fund for Parched Political Philosophers so that my successors at the lectern are immediately refreshed for their efforts. Miss Manners has long held the belief that champagne is a major civilizing influence, not to mention an invaluable tool in softening up those who resist acknowledging the importance of etiquette as an academic discipline.

A small jewell by a jewell of a weiter
By Michael K. Smith
Why does this nation suffer from an epidemic of rudeness? How can we keep our professional lives from destroying our private lives? How can good manners be squared with the ideals of American life? The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard invited Judith Martin (i.e., Miss Manners) to come and deliver its John M. Olin Distinguished Lecture on these questions, and she responded with this marvelous little book, filled with the sort of good sense (and good humor) that always makes her work eminently readable. The only other scholar ever invited to talk at Harvard on the question of deportment, by the way, was Cotton Mather -- eminent company indeed!
If you think Miss Manners is only interested in which fork to use with the fish course, you obviously haven't been keeping up. She's actually a very skilled practical anthropologist and sociologist, with a lively interest in what sets our theoretically classless American culture apart from the rest of the world. And she has maintained for years that "proper" -- which is to say "common sense" -- etiquette is the very linchpin of a democratic, egalitarian society. A nicely written and very thought-provoking book.

Perfecting American Civilization
By Rebecca of Amazon
"My mission, rather, is to call attention to the need for a philosophically acceptable and aesthetically pleasing standard of American etiquette."

Judith Sylvia Perlman was born in 1938 and spent part of her childhood in foreign capitals due to her father's work as a United Nations economist. She then worked at The Washington Post for 25 years, covering social events at the White House. Later she became a theater and drama critic. In 1978, she created the Miss Manners column.

This tiny book is a compilation of ideas from a lecture given at Harvard University. Judith Martin approached her field work in a different way from most social scientists. Instead of studying a segment of society for a limited period of time, she simply invited everyone in the country to write to her so she could analyze the problems and provide helpful solutions to perplexing questions about etiquette.

"The state of American etiquette is, however, now worse than ever. Miss Manners is forced to act. I shall attempt to show what went wrong, and to propose a modest solution."

Judith Martin then continues with humor, which I happily laughed along with (out loud) right through this book. I had no idea she was such a comedian.

She explains how America is a place where you do your own thing and guides us into the area of manners vs. morals. She can't believe how anyone would not be able to figure out which fork to use if she could go from using quill pen to using a personal computer in three days.

This book will make you think about how you speak to people when going to a party. I know for a fact, there are many people who don't like being asked: "What do you do?" As if that is more important than "who you are." Perhaps we should go up to people and say: "What is your dream? Who do you want to become?" I myself am more my hobbies than what I do to make money.

I grew up in a country where children were seen and not heard, where everyone seemed to mind their manners, but in America, I often feel very confused about what people expect, because often when I'm very polite, they become offended by my sense of trying to be nice. As if it is not real. Manners online is another story altogether. At forums, it often seems to be survival of the fittest, which is why I went back to my silent life of reviewing.

This tiny book has a huge helping of humor! Once you read this book, you will more than likely want to read Judith's "Guide to Rearing Perfect Children," "Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior" and "The Name on the White House Floor."

Short treatise on the history of democratic etiquette
By Mary P. Campbell
The text of the book is a transcribed speech which Judith Martin gave to students at a certain Ivy League institution. It covers a short history of official American manners, such as when President Thomas Jefferson tried to apply his democratic ideals by calling all foreign envoys "Mr. Stuart" and the like, as opposed to using titles in official protocol. This idea did not last.
However, there really isn't that much substance in this book that has not been covered in one of Ms. Martin's many other books. Her main idea is that, as a democratic society, social manners should not depend on money or rank, but egalitarianism, where the fair way to decide precedence is by age -- simply for the reason that everyone eventually gets their chance to take precedence, should they live long enough. Still, reading this prompted me to write Ms. Martin to ask her to write a more complete book on the history of American etiquette. I still await that book.
I would recommend buying a different book by Ms. Martin; the wait I had to get this book wasn't worth it.

Excellent text!
By Gloria Starns
This text is one of the best, if not the best, treatments of the fundamentals of strengths of materials that is available. The content is presented in a logical and pedagologically sound order; graphics are particularly good; sample problems are detailed and reinforce content. If I taught a strength of materials course the most recent edition of this text would be my choice for a text.

Great Text for a useful subject
By Cornsnicker3
For most engineers, Mechanics of Materials will be a reoccurring subject throughout their careers in one way or another. Because of this fact, having a good text as a source of explanation or equations is vital for any engineer as he/she progresses through the engineering ranks.

Mechanics of Materials by Philpot is a great text because it explains all of the material very well, it provides a healthy host of example problems, and connects concepts with visual aids to help a students see what is happening rather than trying only to quantify it with numbers.

The Text has a plethora of example problems to allow a student to practice the concepts if he/she cannot get enough practice from course homework.

After I finished this course, when I took a computer aided engineering class, I used Mechanics of Materials on a daily basis and it became a norm to know how to do everything rather than forgetting all after I was done. Fortunately, had I forgotten, I had a great text for support.

I recommend this text for students and for future professors as well.

Another great little skill book from Kumon
By Susan
I am a homeschool mom who recently discovered the GREAT Kumon books for children. LET'S FOLD is part of the Kumon First Steps series, which also includes 3 other books: Let's Color, Let's Sticker and Paste, and Let's Cut Paper. The books in this series are recommended for ages 2 and up. I want to say I am using these with my 8 yr. old son, along with the regular Kumon books, and he is enjoying it very much. Many children take a while to learn to handle scissors, pencils, glue, and these fun workbooks are a simple and fun way for them to learn these skills!

In LET'S FOLD, there are 39 folding projects. No cutting is involved for the child. Mom or Dad cuts the project off the page for the child to work on. The first 4 folding projects are very simple; folding the square paper in half; a rabbit and panda thus do "peek a boo", a dog has a bone hidden in his mouth, you can make the boy laugh or cry. Projects 5-14 introduce folding the square twice, where the ends meet in the center. This was NOT at first easy for my son, so I am glad there were so many pages of this sort of fold. Projects included: opening the 2 flaps to see the bear and pig change clothes, and many were opening the folded flaps to see the inside of a fruit or vegetable, such as an apple, papaya, cabbage, lemon, melon, green pepper, etc. Projects 15 and 16 introduced folding the 2 bottom corners up to finish the zebra's or bear's face. Projects 17-22 involve the fold where all 4 corners of the square are folded to the center point, making a smaller square. Again, this is NOT always easy for a child to master! These have photos of animals from the rear or as babies, and when the folding is done you see a full view of the animal and in the case of the babies, the grown up animals. Projects 23-32 involve folds that will change the picture (cute drawings) from one thing to another thing as you unfold it: chainging the number of candies, or an elephant into a mouse, or a donkey into a fish. The last 3 have many more folds to create a series of illustrated actions. Projects 33 to 36 are "origami", with the child doing folds in order to make a paper hat, a boquet of flowers in a paper wrapper, a fox's head and a dog's head with ears, etc. The last 3 projects involve accordian or "paper fan" folds, and when folded correctly, one side has tigers, one side has zebras, etc. This is a very well done book for children printed on sturdy paper, and the projects are fun and attractive. Folding isn't something we think children should learn, but it is a good skill, and helps children to learn to concentrate, be careful, and see that paper can make pretty and fun things when folded neatly. I highly recommend it for all children, and I don't think any parent would be disappointed with it. It is something fun and quick you can do together without a lot of supplies; just you and your child, a pair of scissors, and this book. Have fun!

Good quality products
By Claire
This is a high quality printed book, thick and good weight and the prints are high quality.. almost a little too good, since kids will just cut through it like any other cheap paper. My daughter loves to cut and paste and I figured I get her folding too. She's not quite gotten the hang of it yet and she's 3 and 1/2. I don't think a 2 yr old will be able to do this at all.

Nonetheless, it had cute animals and cartoon characters and kids will be sure to like it. The book, like the other books in this series, progress from simple one fold, to tri-fold, to folding corners, to simple origami etc. My daughter likes this book, but not as much as the cut and paste one.

Oh, there is a certificate of completion and a reusable drawing board where you and draw and erase. Although you'd probably have to tear it out of the book to use it since the book is very thick and on the small size (5' x 8'). It would be difficult to hold down the rest of the book and just write on the drawing board. We have not used it.

I would have liked it more if it was bigger, thinner with perforated sheets, and a bit cheaper!

not what I expected...your child may not be able to do this on their own
By reviewmom
Your 2 year old may not be able to do this on their own. They will need help. As the folding gets more difficult, they will definitely need help! My 5 year old daughter even needed my help folding this. Once your child folds each picture (and that's if he or she has acquired the skill to fold) that's it! There's nothing else! As the other reviewer stated: loose papers all around the house! I did however turn some of the folded papers into puppets on popsicle sticks.
