Lots of basic antenna information.

Great book for the SWL listener, scanner enthusiast, or new ham who does not want build an antenna system but purchase off the shelf items. Books gives you the basic criteria of what you need for different frequencies and locations, how to make an informed purchase based on your needs and some of the limitations that you may encounter. No math in this book, just basic antenna principles to be aware of and a bit of a buying guide. Only negative I have is that the book repeats itself at times, but there is enough useful information to still make this a good read, especially if you are starting from scratch and trying to figure out what your first step should be. I expected this to be a 3 star book when I bought it, but when I reviewed all of the information in it, I had to raise that to a 5 star book. Read on my Kindle HDX. Next I will read "Antenna Anthology" by the same author to see if it improves my knowledge base any further.

I am new to HAM radio - this book made many things much more clear. It is straight forward and easy to understand and provided many revaluations for me and advanced my knowledge considerably. Buy it!

A good intro into antennas for the shortwave, scanner, or new ham. Gives good information about the different types of antennas you can use plus the type of coax cable is the best to use for the frequencies and length.

suspenceful

I just finished reading this and had to write this review on this book. This book was even more suspenseful than the first one. I knew some of the things had to happen in this book. I knew Trevor would find her and it was not going to be good. I loved her courage. I bought this after I finished reading the first book. At first I wasn't going to and pick a book I already had but as. I read the last sentence I didn't waste anytime a couple minutes later I was reading this book because I had to find out how the story ends and what would happen to Trevor. I like this book a little better than the first. If you got the first story about Lily then spend the money and get this one also. I'm glad I did or I would be thinking for a long time what happened.

Absolutely nothing inappropriate

This review is actually for this book and its predecessor, He Loves Me Not. The author doesn't have a great writing style and the characters lack dimension but she does have a really good idea of how difficult it can be to escape from an abusive relationship; I know because it took me 18 years to get out of mine. The conflicting emotions that the heroine experiences are true to life. People who have never been victims of abuse often find it difficult to understand what makes it so hard to leave and once you do leave, why it's so hard to not go back and the author manages to capture, in a small way, those particular emotional conflicts. The heroine, in my opinion had things much too easy. She doesn't suffer from financial difficulties which makes her escape much simpler. Most abuse victims don't have the luxury of their own vehicle or a nice fat $100k bank account to live on, nor the luxury of being able to sell a deceased parent's home to add to that bank account. I had to laugh a little when Lily/Kate effortlessly drove away from Reno with no fear of running out of gas money, forked out money to rent a home, walked into a Doctor's Office and paid cash for her appointments and casually stopped by Wal-Mart to purchase a brand new crib and baby clothes...if only it was really that easy! They're not terrible books, but they're not great either. They're easy reads, and it only took me a few hours to get through each of them, although I never had a problem putting either of them down. I'll probably read more from this author because her books are inexpensive and have absolutely no profanity or inappropriate sexual passages and that is refreshing. These would probably be good books for older teenage girls to read to teach them to pay attention to the red flags they will most certainly see when they are dating.

The main character Lilly/Katy never grows. Keeps making stupid decisions that puts her child at risk. Wish I hadn't wasted my money giving this writer second chance.

A must-read Asian American Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Immigrant Studies Text

Yen Le Espiritu, in her book, Home Bound: Filipino American Lives Across Cultures, Communities, and Countries, "contends that Filipino American racial formation is determined not only by the social, economic, and political forces in the United States but also by U.S. (neo)colonialism in the Philippines and capital investment in Asia" (1). Moreover, not content with the narrow, one-sided focus that Filipinos are transformed through the experience of colonialism and migration, Espiritu highlights how Filipinos "in turn transform and remake the social world around them" (2). Home Bound is most specifically an ethnographic study of Filipino Americans in and around San Diego, CA, that is grounded nicely by Espiritu through U.S. immigration laws, U.S. imperialism and colonialism, and intersectional analyses. Espiritu presents the experiences of Filipino Americans in order to educate us about this often overlooked population through their own voices.

Scholars in Women's Studies and Gender Studies may be especially drawn to chapter 7, where Espiritu focuses on the way gender is used by racialized immigrants to assert their superiority over the dominant (white). In this chapter Espiritu turns to second generation daughters and the way in which it is through them, specifically the enforcement of their "female morality-defined as women's dedication to their families and sexual restraint" (160), that racialized immigrants construct themselves as superior. In other words, in light of the racist oppressions they face, one method of responding that immigrants have deployed is to assert their (daughters') moral superiority over whites. Through the lens of generations (first, second, etc.) of immigration, Espiritu challenges us to think of the multiple, intersectional systems, at play, while making clear that this manner of response is not without its own complications and contradictions (namely, the perpetuation of sexist oppression and patriarchal power over daughters).

In addition, I found particularly compelling the end of Espiritu's book, chapters 8 and 9, where she delves more in depth to the ways in which Filipino Americans transform and remake the world around them. These two chapters excitingly point to the new and creative relations constructed by Filipino Americans in regards to cross-racial social relations and immigration as a technology of racialization and gendering.

Excellent book, but do NOT buy the Kindle edition!

This review is for the Kindle edition of "Algorithm Design" by Kleinberg and Tardos Algorithm Design

This book is wonderfully organized. I used it for an Algorithms course and it's just very well laid out, with a nice progression of topics. If you want to gain a good "overall" picture of algorithms, this book is perfect. As with any kind of math, if you want to go much deeper, you'll need specialized textbooks for particular topics, but for a reasonably complete, holistic, one-semester course, you'll love this book. I should also point out that there are several well-crafted exercises in each chapter to cement your understanding and give your grey matter a good workout!

IMPORTANT: The Kindle edition of this book is a horribly travesty to the non-digital edition. The typesetting is crude (Amazon, you can do way better!), important figures/diagrams are scaled to tiny sizes, and formulas just plain look incorrect. My best guess is that this was re-typeset by hand, by a non-technical person using MS Word, so they simply messed it up badly. Personally, I am kicking myself for having paid nearly $90 for this, when I could've bought the "real" textbook for $110.

I was sorely tempted to give it a one-star review, but the content is top-notch, brilliantly put-together and an asset to any student of Computer Science. To recap: DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION!

If you do buy the Kindle edition after reading this review, you'll only have yourself to blame.

Good for reference and teaching, but occassionally makes bad assumptions about obviousness

Typically, the book is clear with its proofs and describes good methods for finding solutions to tough problems. Others have said what is good about the book, and as a reference it is great. From a student perspective it has some issues that keep cropping up over and over.

The biggest issue is that the authors assume a high degree of "obviousness" in problems. I don't mind having to make an intuitive leap to solve a problem, but this often requires an intuitive leap to understand the actual problem rather than the solution. For example, they do not often define terms used in questions, leaving the user to guess. Perhaps this should fall under the professor's domain, but it is still frustrating. The index is not great. The authors perhaps need to re-evaluate what is common knowledge to practitioners who are not invested in the domain of algorithm analysis.

Otherwise a good book. Heck, if you don't do the exercises and just use it for reference you couldn't do better.

This book will complicate concepts that should be very straightforward

This book is very poorly written. It serves as an ego boost to the authors to speak in such over-the-top abstract academic nonsense. This is not a book to purchase if you're learning algorithms, there are many better ways to describe the concepts and procedures in this book. This book is something you may want to buy if you're familiar with the field and wish to look at these techniques from a different perspective. To learn any of these concepts you would do much better to find some other learning resource online or purchase a different book. The algorithms presented in this book could be presented in a much more plain-language way with better examples on their construction. I am very displeased with this product.

Schoenbaum takes us on a tour of the countless myths and legends which have arisen to explain the great dramatist's life and work, bringing the story right up to 1989 with the publication of A.L. Rowse's Discovering Shakespeare. In the new edition, the emphasis is on more recent "lives" of Shakespeare, with information culled from such diverse sources as E.A.J. Honigmann's Shakespeare: The "Lost Years" and Richard Ellmann's Oscar Wilde (Wilde's Portrait of Mr W.H. advanced his theory of the Sonnets in fictional form). Besides fanciful theories such as Wilde's, Schoenbaum covers those who have used blatant forgery to construct an imaginary Shakespeare, such as W.H. Ireland and J.P. Collier (the latter would occasionally add his own verse to the Shakespeare canon), and those who have attempted elaborate argumentation to establish the identity of Shakespearean characters (A.L. Rowse claimed to have identified the elusive "Dark Lady" of the Sonnets). From Ben Jonson, whose celebratory verse opens the First Folio of Shakespeare's complete works (published seven years after his death), to Malcolm X, who denied the existence of a historical Shakespeare, Shakespeare's Lives considers virtually the entire legacy of idolatry, heresy, and speculation.
As before, Schoenbaum submits the documentary record of Shakespeare's life to careful consideration. Like a literary detective, he reconstructs as much of the elusive author's life as possible, considering his family history, his economic standing, and his reputation with his peers. The Shakespeare who emerges may not always be the familiar one (he was less vaunted by his contemporaries than we usually believe, for example), but all of Schoenbaum's claims are exquisitely documented.
Even in this revised and abridged version, Schoenbaum's narrative leaves hardly a stone unturned--from Samuel Johnson, Samuel Coleridge, and Alexander Pope to twentieth-century writers like James Joyce, E.K. Chambers, and Anthony Burgess (whose popular life of Shakespeare appeared the same year as the first edition of Schoenbaum's book). Curiousity about Shakespeare has not subsided since the original version of this classic appeared. This new edition will make the latest lives of Shakespeare available to a whole new generation of the Bard's fanatical followers.

a must for serious lovers of shakespeare

If you love Shakespeare, buy this book--you won't be disappointed. Schoenbaum doesn't discuss the plays, but instead the man who wrote them--or, more specifically, the differing ways that his life has been interpreted. That's right, it's a biography of Shakespeare's biographers, leading us step by step through several centuries of interpreters of the Bard, and the various wacky ways they have interpreted his life. It might not sound compelling, but boy it is. The early portions of the book are good enough, but it really takes off when the author starts to discuss the "Baconian" heretics--authors who have argued that Francis Bacon (or some other aristocratic, and therefore supposedly more intelligent, fop) actually wrote the world's greatest plays. He wonderfully illustrates the bizarreness of the men and women who originated this fanciful claim, and explains how it has unfortunately caught on in the popular imagination. (One of the first "Baconians," the not-coincidentally named Delia Bacon, is a tragically grotesque character worthy of Shakespeare himself.) This is a hefty book that you won't finish in a single sitting, but I still highly recommend it.

Indispensable for Shakespeare Lovers

I first read Schoenbaum a long time ago and was astounded at the way Shakespeare's career had so many different incarnations, from his popularity in his own time to the legendary status David Garrick awarded him, to the love of readers world-wide (including Dickens and Abraham Lincoln), to the "fashions" in Bardolatry that change and morph to this day. I re-read it recently and he remains one of the great Shakespeare scholars of the 20th century. This book is probably more for readers with some background already in Shakespeare's works, but with a little grounding in the art, you will be amazed at the history.

A superlative tome

This ample, carefully written, entertaining volume deserves a lengthier review than space permits. It is not only a re-examination of the established facts about Shakespeare's life and career (and those facts remain sparse); it is also a lengthy anecdotal narrative of the successive attempts, beginning humbly in the 17th century and reaching levels of near frenzy in the 18th- and 19th-, to provide a biography, turn legend into fact, forge documents, decipher the works, to imagine, to invent, to exalt or denigrate the personality behind the plays and poems. Schoenbaum's fascination with the motives and temperaments of the individuals behind these efforts is obvious, and he succeeds admirably in making us share his response. It's a big book in all senses of the word; there is a massiveness of research in "Shakespeare's Lives" that a more dilatory man might have taken a lifetime to accomplish.
