Life drawing class in a book!

I HIGHLY recommend picking up ANY of the books in this series. The Pose series is the one of my top three choices in referencing the human figure (with props). This series is overflowing with pictures at almost every angle for each pose. This series will teach you the intricacies of life drawing, such as the human figure, lighting, drapery and props among other things... In my opinion, mastering the human form is one of the hardest things to do. When mastered, it only improves your ability to draw anything in nature.

The best 'girls holding guns' book

I have owned a copy of this book for two years. I am a comicbook artist and have found the poses in the book to be very helpful in getting that 'looking through the scope' pose just right.
I reccomend this above all the other combat pose books which were also very well done.

HORRIBLE DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Worst book ever. I'm a college student, so I've experienced bad books every once in awhile. This book burned for the atrocities is caused me and my fellow students. A new book needs to be written. Everything about it is bad. The writing, the bad explanations, the bad exercises.

Great book on Assembly Language

Previously the books on Assembly I have read have been either 100 percent Intel syntax or have been based on DOS Debug, which is pretty antiquated. Reading this book introduced a number of new concepts and was for the most part an enjoyable read. First thing though, this book is designed as a textbook. While the book does cover the basic syntax in Assembly, I feel that it would be a difficult to read for a beginner who has not at least wet their feet in some form of assembly. It is definitely meant to be a book used in a classroom with an experienced facilitator covering the material. Being that it is a textbook, it does have nice exercises at the end of each chapter, if you can get passed the mental block of doing "homework", which are very helpful in understanding the material. The content of the book is very good. A detailed explanation of the different memory models used in the x86-programming model was very informative. I unfortunately did not get passed the Pentium processor programming, but I look forward to going over the MIPS processor when I get a chance and something to develop on.

good skill to cultivate

The Pentium chip dominates the desktop, and this book reflects that. It teaches you the ideas in assembly programming, with a clear emphasis on doing so for the Pentium.

Dandamudi also provides a concise summary of the history of the Pentium, going way back to the 8085 and 8080, around 1982. From these sprang the x86 family. All the way to the 486. But AMD's pesky nipping at the heels caused Intel to lose copyright to "586"; from which Pentium was chosen as the new copyrightable label. Alas, Intel never pushed "Sextium" but instead used "Pentium Pro".

The book has copious examples of assembly code. These are extensively documented inline, to an extent that you will rarely see in most real code. The pedagogy should be clear to most readers. Who are also encouraged to try the problems provided in each chapter. Assembly programming is very different from coding in a higher language like C or Java, and it is a worthy skill to cultivate. And one that is independent of the actual processor family that you code in. If nothing else, the text gives you an underlying qualitative understanding of how higher languages are ultimately expressed in binary executables.

I suppose I should say that there is also some coverage of alternative chip families in the book. Notably some RISC processors. These form a conceptually distinct approach to designing a microprocessor.

Breaking out of the rut

This is a very good book for breaking out of the rut when you find yourself totally stuck for things to photograph. While some of the images remind one of those you might take in an introduction to photography class, that's not all bad. It gets your creative juices flowing again. Book helps you break repetitive image making and promotes creative thought processes, and it's not as dull as this sounds.

severely disappointed in lack of substance

Save your money.

This book is virtually content free.

96 pages and most of them are pictures.

Which IMHO any average snapshooter already can do.

And if you can't this isn't the book to start with.

This book is barely an outline of a few topics concerning how to see.

The only substance, and I speak loosely, was to break the rules.

Use different angles. Look at parts instead of the big picture.

I infer that if most of your pictures are colored blue that that must be good as the author had a lot of blue pictures.

A good book on composition, and admittedly those are very rare too, would tell you more about seeing. At least then you could look for elements to put together.

This book spent a lot of its few (about 48) pages of instrution doing a second rate job on composition versus actually seeing.

Read it at the library, as you will feel cheated if you spend $20-$25 for this to buy it.

Wabi Sabi for the artist and poet by ?? (Kamen??) would tell you more about seeing than this book.

There are a few good photog books out there. Feininger would blow this one away if you can still find copies.

This is just another one of the disappointments. And it wasnt even artsycraftsy just blah.

A Must if you really want to take great pictures

A friend of a friend asked me to "teach her photography". I asked her if she wanted me to teach her how to use her camera. She said yes, but she wants to learn to take photos that help her express her "artistic side". I told her that, that was difficult to teach but she can truly start the process by reading this book. It is a very straightforward book with lots of photos and explanations on how to help make truly mundane scenes, very interesting. I read it a long time ago and Kodak stopped printing it. I was so lucky to find 2-3 copies from a used book seller. Truly an awesome and inspiring book. If you ever see someone with a camera pointed toward something you don't understand, don't get or wonder "why the hell is he taking a photo of that", perhaps he/she sees something that you don't and is trying to capture it: they probably read this book and are taking great pictures. If you feel that the photos you post on FaceBook of your latest meal are mundane (seriously, no one really wants to see the sloppy mess you are about to masticate and then digest), then read this book and you will begin to notice things that you haven't before and take awesome photos. I wish Kodak could make an updated version of this

Poorly written rip-off

In the description it is advertised as a sort of Hunger Games meets Dawn of the Dead type of book. Its a complete rip-off of hunger games. World's gone to hell, the country is divided into separate districts with one central power, every year 2 contestants from each district square off in a deathmatch til only one is left standing. The only changes from hunger games is the fact that the contestants are deathrow inmates and that they compete outside the districts, amongst the zombies and other wild creatures. But everything else is completely stolen. Camera feeds 24/7 up close and personal with the fighters. A central arena where banquets are held offering much needed weapons/supplies to lure fighters into facing each other. Oh and it's not the Hunger Games, it's the Darwin Games, the most unimaginative and inaccurate title. Darwin never coined the phrase survival of the fittest, which is clearly why his name was chosen for a survivalist deathmatch. And to top it all off, the author sounds like they have a 6th grade reading level. Poor gramar, extremely simple vocabulary, and no ability to set up tone or mood. It feels like you're reading a junior high book report. Couple examples of what I mean: "he saw their fists filled with guts and meat, and mouths painted with the sauce of their kill... The zombies had devoured about 60 percent of the deer so far as Jonah could see," giving exact figures and stats really kills the mood. And "Whoever reaches the Mesa first gets dibs on the best equipment," who writes "dibs" in. Abook? Maybe if a character is saying it then yeah, but you don't try to set up a scene and convey how imprtant it is to be the first contestant to arrive by saying "they get dibs" on it. That's a child writing right there! Don't waste your money on this book. Try a sample if you absolutely must see for yourself. I wish I had done that instead of just assuming it was going to be good, because it didn't even take 10 pages to realize the book is terrible.

Similar to Hunger Games, The Running Man, and GAMELAND

I guess as a zombie junkie I was expecting more from these two talented authors. I thought this first episode was just so-so and nothing really to get excited about. I loved WhiteSpace: Season One (Episodes 1-6 of the sci-fi horror serial). I thought the first episode was a little slow, but the series picked up and I am hooked on it now. I also enjoyed reading Yesterday's Gone: Season One, and I am halfway thru Season 2. I have Season 3 on my Kindle standing by. That being said, I felt this was their weakest effort.

I see many folks are comparing this to The Hunger Games and rightly so. It is difficult to read this episode and NOT picture The Hunger Games. The lead characters are BOTH young girls, a controlling Big Brother type government, fighting to the death for entertainment, and so on. But I would also add that this reminds me of the movie version of The Running Man [Blu-ray]. Convicts fighting to the death for entertainment, a big Master of Ceremony, a Controlling goverment and so on. To really top it off, I started reading a zombie/young adult oriented series back in late May (told in episode format - one per month) called: GAMELAND Episodes 1-8 (S. W. Tanpepper's GAMELAND) by Saul Tanpepper. Yikes, again several elements of the storyline from Z2134 can be found in GAMELAND, and I have been reading that series for months: Controlling goverment, zombies used for game-playing entertainment, young teenage characters, and more so on.

I just think the authors picked a bad time to come out with this series that can be so easily compared to several other books/movies. The Running Man novella written by Stephen King came out in the 80's didn't it? I love these authors, but to be honest, this series is not being written as a 5-star series. Check out my past reviews and you will see that I have given Pratt/Wright several 4 and 5 star reviews for White Space and Yesterday's Gone.

Update to reflect my thoughts on the 2nd episode. My Kindle had no problem with the update. My thinking has not changed since my review above. I am disappointed the authors are not using the zombies more. Hard to get into this zombie story with these zombies.

Updated to reflect reading ALL 4 episodes. Finally in the 4th episode the zombies really start doing something. Still no hint of why we even have zombies, but at last they actually start kicking some butt. Still, not enough to save this series for me. Of course it leaves off answering almost none of the questions we have as readers. I gave the serial a shot based on the history of the Platt/Wright, but I have no desire to read anymore of this series. Still way too much comparison to The Hunger Games and The Running Man (DVD/Blu-ray). Just can't get over it, and never really connected with any of the characters. I am looking forward to Season 2 of White Space.

Just didn't work for me.

Z 2134 is like 1984 and The Hunger Games all rolled into one. There is a central, all-powerful and all-controlling government. The cities are patrolled by a police force called Watchers and you definitely do not want to run afoul of them. The citizens must step in line or face certain death. And of course there are the Darwin Games, and if this isn’t a rip-off of The Hunger Games then I don’t know what is. Several contestants participate in the Darwin Games periodically for the amusement of the general populace. It is a fight to the death in which there can be only one survivor/winner. The Games take place outside the cities in the barrens, which are infested with the walking dead. Not only must the players watch out for each other, they must constantly be on the lookout for zombies. The last surviving contestant is whisked off to City 7, a paradise where the winner can live in freedom and luxury for the rest of his or her life.

This sounds like an amazingly good book, even though it is an obvious ripoff. But oddly enough, it just didn’t do anything for me. I started listening to it and in less than an hour I realized my mind was wandering and I had no idea what the book was about. So I went back and started all over but with the exact same result. I finally had to face the fact that the book was just boring. The narrator’s voice was droning, the characters were uninteresting and unnatural, it just wasn’t working. So after a couple of attempts I moved on to another book.

I can’t say very much about the narration as I don’t feel that I listened to enough of the book to really say how Dan John Miller did. I mentioned above that the narrator was droning but I’ve heard Miller narrate a couple of other books and never had any problem with him, so I’m more inclined to blame the bore-factor of Z 2134 on the writing and not on the narration.

This is the best reference book to review with, especially for people who have been out of school for a long time, the problem is finding time to make a commitment to use it.

Solution book review really should be done by a matematician

If you are thinking of buying this book, it means you have bought the Engineer-In-Training Reference Manual. Since you bought the manual, you are truely an idiot if you don't buy the solution manual. With that being said; the solutions book works out all the problems that are in the manual. The solutions are worked out in steps and as far as I can see the steps aren't complicated (meaning there's no mathematical gymnastics involved like knowing an uncommon mathematical identity). The steps are simple enough that you understand what you don't know and have an idea of where to go if you don't understand the solution.

However, just like many college text books, it might have mistakes. I can't comment on whether or not there are many mistakes in the solutions, nor can anyone who needs this book. It would be wise to buy MathCad, MatLab, Mathematica, and/or (Maple?), or any of the industry's number crunching software. Not only will you be able to double check against math errors, but you will deepen your learning with a tool you'll find, at the least, very useful.

Overall, if you are even considering this book; buy it.
