From the Back Cover

InfiniBand is a new networking specification that revolutionizes the interconnect between processor and IO subsystems in the datacenter environment. InfiniBand delivers better performance, flexibility, and scalability than alternative network architectures. Copper wire and fiber optic InfiniBand links offer data rates ranging from 2.5 Gb/s to 30 Gb/s. This technology easily surpasses the performance of competing network infrastructures by providing kernel bypass and memory-to-memory transfer capabilities.

InfiniBand Network Architecture is a comprehensive guide to InfiniBand technology. It describes all hardware and software operational aspects of InfiniBand networking. Using the same building-block approach found in all of the books in the PC System Architecture Series, this book details important concepts relating to the design and implementation of data networks using this emerging standard. A broad overview of the InfiniBand specification is provided, as well as detailed descriptions of all the architecture's operational characteristics.

Specific topics of interest include:

  • Packet addressing, channel adapters, and the role of switches, routers, and repeaters
  • Queue Pair (QP) creation and operation
  • Transfer types, including connected, datagram, and raw datagram service
  • Send/receive operations, such as Send, RDMA Read and Write, and atomic Read/Modify/Write (RMW) operations
  • Link and physical layer descriptions
  • Subnet-local and global addressing
  • The Subnet Manager (SM) and the Subnet Administrator (SA)
  • Performance, communication, device, and baseboard managers

Created for hardware and software engineers and developers, InfiniBand Network Architecture is a critical resource for understanding and implementing this revolutionary technology.

About This BookWho Needs This Book?

It is not MindShare's intention to convince the reader that the InfiniBand networking technology is superior to other networking technologies. As with all of our books, our goal is to provide a detailed description of the InfiniBand technology for those tasked with designing InfniBand hardware and/or software, as well as those responsible for supporting the technology once it has been deployed. The MindShare Architecture Series

Cautionary Note

The reader should keep in mind that MindShare's book series often deals with rapidly evolving technologies. This being the case, it should be recognized that the book is a "snapshot" of the state of the targeted technology at the time the book was completed. We attempt to update each book on a timely basis to reflect changes in the targeted technology, but, due to various factors--waiting for the next version of the spec to be "frozen," the time necessary to make the Bus Architecture changes, and the time to produce the books and get them out to the distribution channels--there will always be a delay.Specifications This Book Is Based On

This book is based on Volumes 1 and 2 of the version 1.0a InfiniBand specification.Specification Is the Final Word

As with all of our books, this book represents the author's interpretation of the IBA 1.0a specification. When in doubt, the specification is the final word.Organization of This Book

The book is organized as follows:
Part 1: Introductory Topics. A comprehensive overview of the InfiniBand technology can be gained from this part of the book. The reader who does not need a comprehensive understanding of all the tortuous detail can just read this part.
Part 2: QP Creation and Operation.
Part 3: Protection Mechanisms.
Part 4: Detailed Description of the Transport Services.
Part 5: Link and Physical Layer Descriptions.
Part 6: The SM and the SA.
Part 7: General Services.
Glossary: Contains the definitions of terms.
Documentation Conventions

This document contains conventions for numeric values as follows.Hexadecimal Notation

This section defines the typographical convention used throughout this book. All hex numbers are followed by an "h." Examples:
9A4Eh
0100h
Binary Notation

All binary numbers are followed by a "b." Examples:
0001 0101b
01b
Decimal Notation

Numbers without any suffix are decimal. When required for clarity, decimal numbers are followed by a "d." The following examples each represent a decimal number:
16
255
256d
128d
Bits Versus Bytes Notation

All abbreviations for "bits" use lowercase. For example:
2.5Gb/s = 2.5 Gigabits per second.
2Mb = 2 Megabits.

All references to "bytes" are specified in upper case. For example:
10MB/s = 10 Megabytes per second.
2KB = 2 Kilobytes.

Other designations:
"lsb" refers to the least-significant bit.
"LSB" refers to the least-significant byte.
"msb" refers to the most-significant bit.
"MSB" refers to the most-significant byte.
Bit Fields (Logical Groups of Bits or Signals)

In many cases, bit fields are documented as 15:8, with this example referring to bits 8 through 15.Visit Our Web Site

Dreadful in every way
By John F. Hubbard
I am a linux kernel developer, working on a project that involves the open source version of the Infiniband kernel drivers. I figured I'd take advantage of this opportunity and learn as much as possible about Infiniband. I'm still doing that, but without using this book.

This is truly one of the worst technical books I've ever had the misfortune of purchasing. I am returning it now. Aside from being an unreadable jumble of high- and low-level technical notes, even the print quality is spectacularly poor.

The only reason to buy this would be if there is nothing else available. Fortunately, you'll find better information from the Infiniband Trade Association. Fill out the online form, and download all the documents, and you'll be just fine.

Hope that helps.

Kind of like a specification
By Bradley Goodman
Contained a lot of information - but so does the multi-thousand page Infiniband spec.

This book doesn't really attempt to give a good explanation as to high level concepts - or any type of practical considerations. I would describe it as more-or-less regurgitating a ton of stuff listed in the Infiniband spec - all of which is available in the actual spec.

This book was a cheap-shot to get something voluminous out quickly, while adding little value.
