good usage of Matlab

Woods offers an intense mathematical treatment of numerous methods of doing signal analysis. Here the input can be a two dimensional image, which in itself is a vast field of filter design, using Finite Impulse Response (FIR) and Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters. The nice aspect of dealing with these images is that at least you can readily get feedback in the form of processed images. Which also attests to the practical value of the often intricate calculations.

The book prefers Matlab as the backing software engine. These days, at least at the level of this book, you should not need to write all your own code. Matlab has tons of subroutines prebuilt for analysis. What the book does is help you understand and use them.

The advantage of having Matlab compared to not using any package is apparent if you have tried learning from texts on this subject from 20 years or more ago. Then, the maths could be arbitrarily involved, but it was difficult to translate that into functioning code that you could then apply and see the results. Matlab lets you close this loop far more easily.

The text also delves into image enhancement and analysis. The distinction between these might be lost to many. But in this field, the analysis is the harder problem. It tries to work backwards from a 2d image to, in some cases, derive the 3 dimensional structure that gave rise to the image. While the full case is probably ill determined and unsolvable, the narrative describes several very useful simple algorithms that tackle low level tasks like object segmentation.

Bayesian analysis is another key idea for you to assimilate. The description is good but necessarily brief. Bayesian Data Analysis, Second Edition (Chapman & Hall/CRC Texts in Statistical Science) can extend the treatment considerably.

Compression is another important idea covered well. Applied to both 2d images and video, where perhaps the latter exhibits the greater need for massive compression.

Over my head

I made the mistake of selecting this book as a refresher of my undergraduate level "Digital Image and Signal Processing" class that I took and loved, but over the last 10+ years, have forgotten many aspects of it. The first sentence in the preface to this book was my first indication that I may have made a poor choice: "This is a textbook for a first- or second-year graduate course for electrical and computer engineering (ECE) students in the area of digital image and video processing and coding..."

"OK," I thought, "I'll see what I can get out of it." What I got was a realization that my math skills are not what they used to be, that my undergraduate class only touched the surface of real signal processing, and also that MATLAB is a really great tool for modeling these sorts of problems. As far as I can tell, the book is very up-to-date and, to the best of my knowledge, comprehensive. I can tell you for sure that there are lots of illustrations that help describe what is going on, even if you don't remember (or never learned) how to do all the math behind it.

I'm giving this book 5 stars because any faults I can find are faults with my own level of understanding and not that this book is poorly written or anything like that.

If you are, as the preface directs, a grad student who has already learned a fair amount of this stuff and you also are brushed up on your math skills, and especially if you have access to and are comfortable with MATLAB, then I would happily recommend this book. For the rest of us... try something a little easier.

A Valuable Update ...

One is always hesitant to invest in a new edition. Frequently, the majority of the text tends to be recycled and, often, the pay-off is a new diagram or an additional entry. It's frustrating, to say the least. Nonetheless, this newest edition of Multidimensional Signal, Image, and Video Processing and Coding contains generous additions that easily justify its seemingly hefty price.

The new appendices are possessively invaluable (as any student of this field can verify). Likewise, the new focus on image analysis and super-resolution methods are timely and most welcome.

It bears noting that that the online supplemental material/support is invaluable. Take advantage of it!

As with the first edition: the language is direct, the progression is logical (it strongly pushes the student toward success), and the examples/figures clearly support the material.

If you are leery of investing in this newest edition, set those fears aside. This is a substantial update to an already exemplary text.
